Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS MAGGI, OF KEMPTTHAL, SlVITZERLAND, ASSIGNOR TO JULIUS MAGGI & CO., OF SAME PLACE.
COMPRESSED- FOOD PACKAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,243, dated December 25, 1888.
To LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, .TULIUS MAGGI, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residiug at Kemptthal, in the Republic of Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovements in a Oompressed-l+`ood Paekages, ot' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to eompressed-t'ood packages, and has for its object to provide such a package thatwill not be affeeted by the moisture and will be easily broken at any desired pointg andit consists in the improved coinbiuatiou of parts, as will be hei'einat'ter nore particularly described, and pointed out iu the claim.
Referring to the aeeonpanying drawings, Figure 1 is a long'itudina l seetioual View of a package, and Fig. 2 is a side view ot' the same.
A represents the contents ot' the package, which may eonsist ot' any desired arliele, but which in this instanee e'nsists ot' eonpressed tablets u', a, ai', w", and a, pret'- erably of a round or eirmlar form. These tablets may be eonposed ol any desired material-sueh as ingredients ,tor soup, &0.- which in this instauee are ol' such a size that one tablet will make enough soup for six persons. After the tablets have been oom 'ressed separalely the desired number are placed together, one upon. the other, as shown in Fig. 1, and are then covered 'with a wrapper ot' tiu-foil, or other noistproot' material, either with or without being eompressed to gether. In this condithm all that isi necessary when it is desired to use any of the tahle s is to break off as many as required without taking o't'f the wrapper, the tin-t'oil tearing so easily as to praetically etter no resistanee; but as the tin-foil is so easily torn it would be liable to become so torn or damaged in shipping and handling as to render it useless as a moist-proof eovering, and thus fail` to reserve the contents. To overcome this Application filed June 23, 1388. fierial Ne. 277884. (No specinens.)
defeet it is necessary to provide au additioual wrapper o't' amore substantial material-as, 'or instanee, parehnentized paper, C-Whieh is put around the tin-:foil and seeu red at the end by folding or sealing. As this material so strong as to prevent injury to the tinfoil, it consequently so stron as to prevent the package being broken at any desired point, as could be done with the wrapper ot' tin-foil. I have found, however, that by perforatiug this outside wrapper with rows ot' small apertures 1 ,77 F, i' and f and so placing the wrapper that these apertures will register with the divisions between the tablets, the package can be broken almost as easily as itcould be without the adljlitional wrapper. In this nanuer a most useful article is produced for family use or t'or travelers, as the package can be taken into all clinates withoutdeterioratitm or loss and can be opened without the neeessity of unwrapping the entire package, as all that is necessary is to break the package at a row of apertures as will take ot't' as nany tablets as are required for that time.
llaving'th'is deseril'e`l my invention, l claim and desire to seeu re by Letters Patent ot' the United States- Ina eoinpressed-tood mekae'e, the con'bination ol? a series ot' tablets, one upon the other, a 'frag'ile noist-proof wrapper, and an additional strong protecti'g-wrapper pro vided with rows of apertures regislering with the divisions 'between the tablets, substan-` tially as described. In testimony whereol' l .have signed this specifieation in the presence ol" two subscribin; witnesses.
.l -U Ll US MAGGI.
