UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN J. FRASER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO LOUIS W. BOYER, OF SAME PLACE;
CASE R ENVELOPE FOR PUTTING UP CIGARETTES FOR THE MARKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,171, dated April 24, 1883.
Application filed August 18,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN J. FRASER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have made and invented an Improved Oase or Package for Putting Up Gigarettes for the Market; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.-
My invention is an improvement on the present modes of putting up or wrapping cigarettes in packages for the market; and it consists in the improved construction hereinafter set forth and claimed.
The following description fully explains my said improvement and the manner in which I proceed to construct, apply, and use it, the accompanying drawings being referred to by letters and figuresthat is to say Figure 1 is a view of my improved package when filled and put up ready for the market. Fig. 2 shows the package after the revenuestamp or the wrapping is broken and the two parts are about to be separated. Fig. 3 shows one of the parts or cases of which I construct my improved package.
A A represent two compartments or receptacles, each of a size to hold five cigarettes, and forming, when put together, a package of the usual size containing ten cigarettes, according to the present mode adopted by the trade and. as required by the Internal Revenue Department. These parts A A are laid together, one upon the other, and are attached at and along one end bya hinge-joint, b. This connection is made either by a label or wrapping, D, pasted around and across the adjacent ends or sides of the two receptacles, or by simply applying a strip of paper for a hinge across these edges. To fasten down the flaps c c and secure the opposite ends together, a small label or the necessary revenuestamp e is placed across the two receptacles, so that the package may not be opened and divided without destroying the stamp. In forming such a package I first form complete the parts A, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and then by means of a strip, 1), I attach one part to the other at and along one edge or side strongly enough to hold them together for ordinary purposes, and yet of such character that when desired the joint can be broken and one part readily separated from the other by the purchaser. Where the labels are printed directly upon the outside of the cases A A, I use the separate hinge-strip; but where a wrapping-label is employed it is carried entirely around both parts A A, and thus forms the attachment between the two parts.
Such construction permits separation of the package by the consumer, so that at the time of purchase it can be reduced to a desirable or more convenient size to he carried about the person or to be divided for separate use and each part remain provided with its own case or wrapping. This is of particular advantage in the case of cigarettes provided with tips or mouth-pieces. By separating the cigarettes also into independent layers or parcels better protection against breaking and crushing is afforded, while by the peculiar form of the package it can be filled in the operation of putting up the cigarettes for the retailer in much less time than is now required by other styles of package, as they are particularly adapted for filling by machinery.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters I Patent, is-
The cigarette case or package herein described, consisting of the independent com partments A A, provided with the flaps 0 for their open ends, and a hinge-joint, as b, at
the ends which are to be united, as herein set
