UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER \VIEDERER, OF STAPLETON, NElV YORK.
FOLDING MIRROR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,678, dated November 27, 1888.
Application filed January 9, 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER WIEDERER, of Stapleton, in the county ofRichmond and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Mirrors, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to certain improvements in that class of folding mirrors which are so constructed that the sides, front, top, and back of the face and head can be seen at the same time; and the object of my invention is to provide a new and improved mirror of this kind which can be adjusted as a triplicate mirror and as a quadruplex mirror, or mirror for viewing the top and back of the head.
The invention consists in the combination of a main or central mirror, a wing-mirror hinged to each side of the main or central mirror, and a mirror hung on arms and adapted to swing above the main or central mirror.
The invention also consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved folding mirror adjusted for viewing the sides, top, and back of the head. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same adjusted in the same manner. Fig. 3 is a side'view of the same on a larger scale, folded or closed, parts being broken out. Fig. 4 is a front view of the same folded or closed, parts being broken out.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The main or central mirror, A, is provided with the frame A, and the side or wing mirror B and G with the frames B and C, respectively.
The main mirror-frame A is provided on the top and bottom with the bars D D, provided in each end with a transverse slit, E, into which slits the ends of the hingc-elips F are passed and pivoted, the said hinge-clips being secured to the top and bottom edges of the wing-mirror frames B and G at the inner sides, so as to adapt said wing-mirrors to swing toward and from the central or main mirror.
The bottom bar or rod, D, is provided with legs G. On the top bar, D, the two arms H Serial No. 260.161. (No model.)
are mounted to swing at the side edges of the main frame A,sai.d arms H being provided at their hinged ends withthe offsets or bonds J, to adapt said arms to clear the hinge-clips F when the arms are folded down at the sides of the main mirror, as in Figs. 3 and 4. Said offsets or bends J can rest on the stops K on the back of the main mirror-frame when in the raised position, as shown in Fig. 1. The swinging ends of the arms H are connected by the transverse rod L, and on the same the arms M are mounted to swing adjacent to the ends of the arms H, and the upper or swinging ends of the arms M are connected by the transverse rod 0, on which the mirror P is mounted to swing, said mirror being slightly smaller than the central or main mirror, A. Then the mirror is to be used, the arms H and M are swung up, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the desired or requisite inclination is given to the mirror P. The wing-mirrors B and C are swung from the main mirror A and adjusted at the proper inclination.
To close the mirror, the wing-mirrors B and O are folded on the main mirror, the mirror P isswung between the arms M and the arms H M, and the mirrors P are swung down upon the" iaeking of the front wing-mirror, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The hinge-joint connecting the wing-mirrors with the main mirror is very simple and does not interfere with folding the arms H at the sides of the main mirror.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with a mirror-frame, of jointed arms mounted to swing on the top of the mirror-frame, which jointed arms have bends or offsets J at their hinged ends, stops on the back of the mirror-frame for support ing said bends or offsets when thejointed arms are raised, and a mirror mounted on said jointed rods, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PETER XVIEDERER.
