US. Patent Dec. 30, 1975 Sheet 3 0f 4 US. Patfint Dec. 30, 1975 Sheet 4 of4 OUTDOOR ADVERTISING SIGN BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Outdoor advertising signs are conventionally of the type having their longitudinal axis located in a generally horizontal relation to the ground. The signs are generally 12 feet high and 25 feet long for poster advertising, and 14 feet high and 48 feet long for painted advertising. In order to erect signs of this type it isnecessary to obtain permission to use a substantial section of real estate. Also, the signs if of the poster type, must be made in sections and secured to the supporting panel and if painted, they must be painted at the site of the sign or at a point remote from the advertising location.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The outdoor advertising sign of the present invention is of the vertical type requiring a single pole for supporting the sign. The sign can be used with either posters or painted advertising which is applied to a panel provided on a frame that is removably mounted on the pole. Since the sign is mounted on a single pole, it is only necessary to obtain permission for embedding the pole in the ground. A substantial saving can be achieved with a single pole arrangement. Also, since the supporting frame is removable from the pole as a single unit, the signs can be prepared at a point remote from the advertising location and simply mounted on the pole.
DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the sign according to the invention;
FIG. 2 is an exploded perspective view of the sign;
FIG. 3 is a side view of the sign showing the frame mounted on the support member;
FIG. 4 is a front view of the sign with a portion of the sign panel removed to show the frame member;
FIG. 5 is an enlarged section view taken on line 5-5 of FIG. 4 showing the mount for the frame member;
FIG. 6 is an enlarged side view of one of the clips of the frame mounted on the support member;
FIG. 7 is a perspective view of one of the clip assemblies.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Referring to the drawings, the advertising sign 10 of the present invention generally includes a single pole 12, a support member 13, and a frame 14 removable mounted on the pole. The frame 14 is provided with means in the form of a panel 15 on which an advertising display can be posted or painted. Means in the form of a light 16 can be provided on the pole 12 in a position to illuminate the front of the frame 14.
More particularly, the pole 12 is hollow and is adapted to be embedded in the ground. The lower portion can be embedded in a concrete support 17 or directly into the ground if the ground is sufficiently rigid to support the sign.
The frame 14 is supported on the pole by means of the support member 13 which includes a pair of elongate upright elements 20 and a number of elongate lateral cross arms 22. The elongate elements 20 are in the form of angle irons which are spaced apart and secured to the cross arms 22 by welding. The elements 20 are spaced apart a distance sufficient to allow room .for the sides 24 of the elements 20 to be aligned on the frame 14.
The support member 13 (Fig. 5) is secured to the pole 12 by means of a number of collar assemblies 26 having bolts 27 secured to the ends of flat iron strips 29. The bolts 27 extend through openings 30 provided in the cross arms 22 and are held in position by nuts 23.
Means are provided on the lateral cross arms 22 for preventing the frame 14 from moving laterally on the cross arms 22. Such means is in the form of a number of bolts 32 which extend through opening 33 provided in the cross arms 22 and are held in position by means of nuts 34.
The frame 14 is formed from four identical sections 35. Each section 35 includes a 'pair of side members 36 and a pair of end members 38. Each section includes a pair of cross braces 40 and 42. The frame 14 is assembled by aligning two of the sections 35 in a side relation, each two sections then being aligned end to end with two other sections. The sections are secured together by means of flat support plates 44 nailed to the framesections at each of the intersecting points of the cross braces and side and end members.
Means are provided on the front of the sections 35 for displaying advertising posters or paintings. Such means is in the form of a panel 15 secured to the sections 35 by means of flat head carriage bolts 49.
The frame 14 is removably mounted on the support member 13 by means of a number of clips 48 provided on the side members 36 and the end members 38 of section 35. Clearance for each of the clips 48 is provided to compensate for the thickness of the plates 44 by means of plates 50 having a thickness substantially equal to the thickness of .the plates 44. The clips 48 and plate 50 are held in position by the bolts 49 and screws 51. The clips 48 mounted on plates 44 are secured to the frame in the same manner. The clips 48 are positioned to engage the upright section 25 of the cross arms 22 with the bolts 32 located in alignment with the inside edges of the side members 36.
It should be noted that the weights of the frame 14 is sufficient to hold the frame on the support member. The clips 48 will seat on the upright section 25 of the cross arms 22 with the bolts 32 preventing lateral movement. The frame 14 can then be simply lifted off of the support member and replaced by a new frame.
The panel surface is illuminated by means of the light 16 which is secured to the pole 12 below the frame 14. The light 16 includes a support bracket 52 and extends outwardly from the pole on a support arm 54 a distance sufficient to support the light 16 in a position to illuminate the front of the panel 15.
I claim:
