MATTHIAS GATES, OF WICHITA, KANSAS.
ADJUSTABLE Nurse-Bevan SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 392,508, dated November i6, 1888.
Application filed July 10, 18H8. Serial No. 279,551. (No model.)
T0 a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHIAS Gamas, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Miter-Bevels; and l do declare the following to bc a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of my invention and is a side view thereof. Fig. 2 is a side view with bevel-blade re- Fig. 3 is a side view showing miterianges. Fig. Ll is a perspective, and Fig. 5 is a detail. f
The invention relates to improvements in miter-bevels; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth.
The object is to provide a convenient tool so arranged and graduated that the bevelblade may be easily and accurately adjusted to the proper inclination for marking a rafter or other timber to be beveled at the ends.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the stock, preferably having one of its edges faced with metal, as at c. The metal facing near one end has the laterally-projecting lug a', which is designed as a bearing.
B is a try-square blade rigidly fixed in the kei-f b at one end of the stock.
C C' represent the clamping-jaws for the bevel-blade D, the inner one, C, being rigidly secured to the stock by means of screws, and the outer one, U, being removably placed on one side of the blade and on the raised transverse strip b. A lug, c, on the strip b enters a notch in the removable jaw and serves to prevent it from turning.
E is a thumb screw for clamping the jaws tightly on the bevel-blade. Each jaw is provided with a laterally-projecting ruiter-plate, E', one of which is designed as a marker to the right and the other to the left.
F is an arc recess in the jaw C, within which the arc fulcrumplate G is designed to move. A rib, c, on the are fulcrum is adapted to enter the longitudinal slot e in the bevel-blade D, so that the said blade may be adjusted lengthwlse.
The lugf on the jaw Gis designed as astop for the bevel-blade. When the edge of the blade bears against the lug, the said blade is at right angles to the stock and may be then used as a try-square. 4
One edge of the jaw C is transversely bevL eled and provided with graduating or scale marks which extend over the front face of the jaw, as atf, and are numbered for a purpose hereinafter4 explained. The scale g on the beveled edge of the jaw is divided into sixteenths, by means of which the fall or pitch of a door or window sill maybe ascertained or describedvthat is, the bevel-blade placed at the first mark on the scale will indicate a fall of one inch to the foot.
The openings h through the try-square blade and the bevel-blade enable the mechanic to obtain any width of groove or rabbet for window or door cap or staircase at the same time the square and bevel are determined and marked.
It will be observed that the seale-marks on the face of the jaws Care numbered 612, 12-6, 812, 12-8, and 12-12, and the method of` operation may be illustrated as follows:
To mark olf the ends of the rafters for a roof having one-fourth pitch, thev inner edge of the bevel-blade is placed at the mark numbered 6-12, which gives the bevel for the top end of the rafter. Then move the blade to 12-6 to mark the bevel at the foot of the rafter.
Having described my invention, what I claim 1sl. In combination with the stock, the trysquare blade having the rabbetmarking openings, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the stock, of the jaws having the right and left laterally-projecting unter-markers, substantially as speci- 9 5 fied.
3. The combination, with the stock, of the fixed jaws, the removable jaw, the arc fnlcrum, the bevelblade, and the trysquare blade, substantiallyT as specified.
4. The combination, with the stock, of the thereon and the rabbet-marking openings in ro fixed jaw having the laterally-projecting mi the blade, substantially as speeilied. l ter-plate, the removable jaw having the miter- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in plate, the clamping-screw, the are recess in presence of two witnesses. theiixed jaw, the fuleruinplate having'the rib Ivi v 1 moving therein, and the bevel-blade having MA1 UNAS GATES' the longitudinal slot to eng-nge the said rib, Witnesses: substantially as speeiled. JOHN lllnN'DnNirA LL,
5. A bevel having piteh-grmlnnting nim-ks JOHN G. BRIGHT.
