SAMUEL DEAN, OF TOPEKA, INDIANA.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,446, dated lliecember Miei?,
Application filed January S0, 1899. Serial No. 703.939. (No model.) I
To fallu/hom it may concern:
Be it known that l, SAMUEL DEAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Topeka, in the county of La Grange, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpenters Gages, of which the following is a specification. 4
The object of my invention is to provide an attachment for the framing-squares com inonly used by carpenters, by means of which the various angles of cuts may be indicated,
the lengths ofsuch cuts shown, and the dis\ tance between cuts shown on a framing-timber or instairwork and the like.`
A further-object is in providing a device of this character that may be cheaply made, easily and quickly adjusted and operated', and which will accurately perform the work for which it is intended. i
cation to a square and a piece of timber. Fig. l
l 2 is a detail, partly in section, .of one of' the 3 0 long. Secured at each end .go this groove slidingly lit the upturned lower clamps used in my device. details of the clamp used in my invention.
`Referring to thedrawiugs, A represents a strip of hard wood rectangular in crosssec tion and preferably about thirty-one inches of the 'strip A by small screws b is the bent-over end of a iiat steel plate B of the same wid th as the strip A. Between .the contiguous faces of the strip and plate a space is left in which the square C, of common construction, may beinserted and freely moved.
In the under sideof the strip A is formed a longitudinal groove o, which extends A throughout the entire length of said strip. In
Figs. 3 and 4 are ends e of the clamps H and I, which overhang said strip and are provided with screws h, which are adapted to be soreweddown upon the plate B, and thereby binding the square between said plate and the upper side of the strip A in a weil-'known manner. The clamps y or small boards or timbers and vscale F.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a vone of their are prefer hand, respecgive a long hearing inY On the upper face of the plate B is indicated a graduated scale, one edge of which shows inches and fractions thereof, as at F, and the opposite edge feet at D, thus permitting measurements for large the use ot the square on'either side of the gage.
In using my device 'the square is inserted between the plate and the strip, and a given polnt on the tongue of the square is connected and fractions thereof, as
or registered with 0 or the beginning of the I The clamp H is then brought toa position where the tongue and the strip or gage cross or overlap and firmly screwed in such position. The blade of the square is then brought to a point to register with the scaleiigure required and the clamp l moved along and secured at such junction. In Jthis way, one side of an angle being known, the length of the other two sides may be determined yand the angles indicated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, is
A gage attachment for carpenters squares, consisting of astrip of wood having a longitudinalgroove in its under side, a yielding metal plate having scales indicated thereon, said plate being secured to the ends of the wooden strip so as to leave al space between the upper side of the strip and the lower side of the plate, and removable clamps adapted to embrace said plate and strip and having ends adapted to slide in the groove in the strip, and adj listing-screws in said clamps, as set forth.
