Be it known that I, \(VILLIAM R. OSTRA NDER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pneumatic Door-Opener, of which the rollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is a pneumatic door-opener,
more or less remote from the door'to be opened.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a rear view of my'invention with one of the side casings removed,
a fragment of a door, the locking-bolt of the door being engaged and secured by the boltblock, and the releasing-pin on the door resting against the pin-block. WVhile in this position the locking mechanism of my device is engaged and the door locked. Fig. 2 is a rear view of my device with one of the side casings removed, the bottom locking-lever being out of engagement with the gravity-bar, the boltblock and pin-releasing lug on the spring-actuated shaft being turned from the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the inner side of the recessed casing for the side of the device. an arm pivoted thereto, the arm being notched or recessed, so as to engage the side of the gravity-bar. Fig. 4. is a sectional view taken on the lines a: a: of Fig. 1, the side casing shown in Fig. 3 being in position. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the lines yy of Fig. 1, the back casing being in position; and Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line w w of Fig. 2, the side casing being shown in position. B is a fragment of a door, 0 the bolt thereof, and D a pin fixed to the door below the bolt, said door, bolt, and pin being shown in dotted lines. E is a shaft having small ends e e. Said ends are journaled in the top and bottom casing-plates, F F, respectively. The upper end of this shaft is provided with a spiral spring, G. The upper end of this spring rests against the inner face of the striking-plate A. The lower end of this spring is fixed to the shaft aforesaid. Said shaft is provided on its upper side with a bolt-block, I, and provided on its lower side with a lug, J, for engaging the pin on the door. The said bolt-block and lug are fixed on the periphery of the shaft about sixty degrees from each, other. The
lower inner side of the shaft is also provided with a small lug, K, for engaging an car on the locking-lever.
L is the locking-lever. This lever is ful crumed at Z to a small plate, L, fixed to the inner side of the bottom casing. Said lever is provided with an. ear, L and an arm, L and it is also provided on its outer upper side with a pin, L, for engaging and looking with the gravity-plate.

- M is the recessed side casing. This casing .is recessed at M in its side to permit the door bolt and pin to move in and out of the recess in the side of the striking-plate.
M is a lever fulcrumed to the inner side of the plate M. This lever is notched or recessed at on, so as to engage the side of the gravityplate N. r
O is the side casing opposite from the casing M. The casing O is provided with an opening in which a tube, P, is inserted.
- Q represents bellows within the casing. One side of the bellows is secured to the inner face of the casing O. The tube 1? opens into the bellows, so that when air is forced through the tube the bellows will expand. The bellows are preferably made of rubber, so as to lie normally contracted, as shown in Fig. 4. Suit able tubing may extend from any desired part of a building and connect with the tube 1?.
The operation of my invention is as follow 2 \Vhen the parts are in the position shown in Figs. 1, 4, and 5, the device is locked-that is to say, the bolt-block I held so as to firmly engage the door-bolt between the side of said block and the edge of the recess in the striking-plate. \Vhile the parts are in this position it will be observed that the lockinglever is turned so that its pin If is near the inner side of the casing O and locked on the side of the gravity-bar N, said bar lying down on a line parallel with the locking-lever L. lVhen the parts are so arranged, the spiral spring is exerted to turn its shalt, the block I, and lugs J K; but these parts are firmly held by means of thelockingof the gravity-bar with thelocking-lever, the car If on the locking-lever engaging the shaft-ear K, so as to prevent said shaft and integral parts from turning.
To unlock the parts, release the bolt and open the door. Air is forced through the tube P into the bellows. Said bellows are thereby instantly expanded, and the side of said bellows O is forced into contact with the lever M. This action turns the lever outward and elevates the gravity-bar to which the lever is engaged. Vhen the gravity-bar is lifted, the pin If on the lockinglevcr is released. Then the spiral spring G is free to act, and the action of said spring turns the shaft E and its integral parts-bolt-block I and lugs J K. The movement thus imparted to the lug causes said lug to press against the arm L" of the locking-lever, thereby moving the body ofsaid leverinward in a line with the gravity-bar. At the same time the shaft lug J is-pressed outward in contact with the pin D on the door, the bolt-block I being also turned, so as to release the door-bolt from the recess in the striking-plate. The pressure of the lug J on the door-pin D moves the door and causes it to open. In closing the door which is done by hand, the door-bolt moves in advance of the pin D, so that said bolt enters the strikingplate first. The arrangement is such that the instant the bolt passes into the recess of the striking plate the pin D on the door engages the outer side of the lug or pinbloek J, fore ing said lug inward and turning the shaft, with its boltblock and rear lug, K The rotary movement of these parts causes the bolt-block to secure the bolt within the recess of the striking-plate, leaving the door-pin on the outer side of the lug J, as shown in Fig. 1. While these door-closing results are taking place the shaft-lug K is brought into contact with the ear L on the locking-lever, and said lever turned, so as to move its pin Ii under the gravity-bar and cause said pin to lock with said bar by engaging the side thereof. The weight of the bar causes it to descend and lock with the pin after the pin has passed under it.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Iateut- 1. In a door-opener, a spring-actuated shaft provided with the following parts: a boltbloek, a lug for engaging a door-pin, and a lug for engaging a locking-lever, in combination with a locking-lever, said lever consisting of a long and short arm, an ear, and a locking-pin, and a bar for engaging with and releasing said pin, substantially as specified.
2. In a door-opener, a spring-actuated shaft provided with the following parts: a bolt-block, a lug for engaging a door-pin, and a lug for engaginga locking-lever, in combination with a locking-lever, said lever consisting ofaloug and short arm, an ear, and a locking-pin, a gravity-bar for engaging said pin, and means for actuating said bar, substantially as specified.
8. In a door-opener, a spring-actuated shaft provided with the followingparts: a bolt-block, a lug for engaging a door-pin, and a lug for engaging a locking-lever, in combination with a loel ing-lever, said lever consisting of a long and short arm, an ear, and a locking-pin, a gravity-bar for engaging said pin, a lever for engaging said bar, and bellows for actuating said lever and bar, substantially as specified.
