AUTOMATIC BOLTWORK FOR SAFES.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 4, 1908. Serial No. 419,218..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY M. DALTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new struction in which the devices to be actuated by the time mechanism to release the bolt work when the safe is to be opened, shall be locked against all movement from the time of locking the safe until moved by the time mechanism. p
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated two forms in which I have em-' bodied my invention and my said invention is disclosed in the following description and claims.
In the drawings; Figure 1 is a plan view of a time lock comprising three time mechanisms combined with my improved bolt work and connecting means, the dial of one of the time mechanisms being removed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the time mecha- 7 nism and bolt work with the inclosing casing shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a view of my improved bolt Work with the top plate removed. Fig. 4 is a top or plan vlew of the bottom or base plate upon which the other parts are mounted. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line ww Fig. 4. Fig. 6 1s a top view of the spring carrying plate and the hub of the bolt actuating lever. Fig. 7 is a view of the under side of such'plate and. lever. Fig. 8 is a sectional view on lme Y-Y Fig. 6. Fig. 9 is an isometric perspective of the devices by which the time mechanism controls the detent levers for holding and releasing the bolt work. Fig. 10 1s a partial section of the sleeve and its d sks torming part of the devices shown in F1g. 9. Figs. 11 and 12 show a modified construction for holding and actuating the time lock trip. Figs. 13 and 1% are views of another form of such construction. Fig. 15 shows an ill";
.rangement of three timers with a modifiedl same are mounted on a base plate.

tripping mechanism. Fig. 16 is a view of the same devices with a section on line Z- Z, Fig. 15. I
y improved bolt actuating mechanism together w1th the timers for controllingthe base plate A, see Figs. 4 and 5, is provided with two upwardly extending annular walls a, a the outer of which a forms the side walls of a casing inclosing the bolt operating mechanism. Centrally within the inner wall 'a a gudgeon a is provided on the base plate and upon this is mounted the bolt actuating lever B, see Fig. 7. This leverhas a hub b and on its upper side is provided with two pins 6 b" which engage openings in the bolts B, B, see Fig. 3. The parts B, B as shown are movable parts designed to be connected with and move the actual locking bolts. As they move with the locking bolts The 1 for the convenience of description they are herein termed bolts. bolts are of such a size and form as to permit the movement of the pins in their curved path aroundthe gudgeono to eiiect the straight line movements of the bolts.
enlarged outer ends. The heads are enlarged upon one slde formmg a shoulder -6 and these, heads rest upon blocks A, A
having on each. side of the heads of the bolts, guiding projections a a The upper edge of the annular wall a is cutaway to receive themain body of the bolts which lie side by side with the opposite end of one in line with the shoulder 5 of the other. The bolts are made of such a length that when retracted by the appropriate sprmg the shoulder b of one will come The bolts B, B are 'formedas shown with the The openings in'the in contact with the opposite end of the other as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and thus the inward movements of the two will be arrested withoutshock or jar to the actuat ing devices. I
A plate 0 is journaled on the upper end of the hub Z; of the lever B, as shown in Fig. 8, and is provided with an arm 0 rigidly secured thereto by which it can be turned when desired. This arm extends outwardly beyond the walls a, a, whichwalls are cut away to admit the passage of the arm and i u permit of its being moved. To the underside of the plate C, are secured brackets or clips 0, 0 (see Fig. 7) and in these clips is mounted the rod C bent into the form of a circle. This rod C passes freely through the outer end of the lever B and through abutment a secured to the base plate. A coiled spring D surrounding the red G ex tends between the lever B and the clip a and another like spring D extends between the clip 0. and the abutment a as shown in Fig. 7,- the abutment a being shown in dotted lines in its relative position when the bolts are in their unlocked position.
0 When the plate C is turned by its arm 0 to compress the springs D and D, this pin engages a semi-circular recess. or notch in a detent lever E pivoted upon astud, secured to the base plate A. This lever is provided with a pin 0 that engages a slot in the secondary detent lever E and this secondary? detent lever is provided with the pin 0' to be engaged bythe trigger of the time mechanism. I 1 When the parts, are assembled for opera -tive action, on turning the plate C by moving its arm 0 toward the right and to the. position shown in Fig. 3, the clips 0 c and rod C will move with it. The lever B be ing held from movement by the dogging of the bolts, the spring D will be compressed between the clip 0 and the lever and the spring D will becompressed between the clip 0 and the abutment a The pin 0 will engage the recess in the detent lever E, turn ing it upon its pivot and causing its pin 0 to; turn the lever E until the pin 6 is engaged and held by the trigger of the time DIGCllitnism. If the door of the safe be now closed. .the dogging devices will release the bolts. and the spring D will expand and force the bolts outward to lock the safe. The lever B1 'will then move toward and en age the clip; 0, which holds the spring D compressed through the. detent levers E, E. These detent levers hold the plate C from turning. lVhen the detent levers are released by the trigger of the time mechanism and spring D forces them to release the pin 0* and the plate C moves back to its unlocked position the clip 0 engaging the lever B and moving it to retract the bolts. The plate C is provided with the s1 ring detent or pawl that when the bolts are moved to locked position, falls into a notch in one 'of the bolts and as long as the timer holds the plate C, this pawl holds the bolts from being moved to unlock the safe by any others than the bolt work springs. The time mechanism is mounted upon a plate G that is placed upon the annular wall "a, and is secured in this position in any preferred manner.
In the drawings (see Figs. 2 and 9) T have shown three time movements and so arrange the devices connecting them with the trigger 'that they may act together to ellect this movement should the others fail to act.
On each ot the winding arbors of the time- Onthe upper side of the plate C is a pin movements is placed a disk Gr having the tooth g. F, F, F are the tripping arms or levers of the several time movements. Each of these trip levers is pivoted intermediate its ends as at f. The upper ends of these levers are each provided with a centrally extending portion f, the upper edge of which is mace concave to closely fit the periphery of the disk G, and on either side of such projection is a notch or recess f to receive the tooth oi the disk G.
When the timers are wound the concavity of the part f engages the plain portion of the disk'G. As the timer is actuated, the disk G moves in a direction the reverse of that in which it moves in winding until the tooth g engages the notch or recess 7 when the trip lever is moved. Opposite the central time movement is a stud H, secured to' the plate C upon which is movably mounted the disk It, having the pin 7b. The lower end oi the trip lever lies in close relation to the said pin it and at the right thereof. To
the lower end of the trip lever F is pivoted the bar f. The free end of'this bar is provided with a slot which engages the pin it and the bar is so placed that the end of the slot nearest the arm F is in close relation to the pi To the lower end of the trip lever F is pivoted a like bar having also a slot at its free end enga ing pin it and having the end of he slot farthest from the lever F in like oh: e relation to the pin it.
Lhe tive time mechanism, more in the direction of the arrow over each. Vnen, therefore, the tooth 9 turns its trip lever the lower end or such lever moves to the left and turns the T is the trigger provided with the shoulder 2' which engages the pin 6 of the secondary detent lever which extends upward through the plate C for the purpose. When thus engaged the bolt work is held in locked position as before explained.
The trigger T is pivotedintermediate its ends and its upper end has a projection 2" which is provided with a concave surface to engage the periphery of the disk 7L3. It is also provided with a notch or recess 6 that when the sleeve H is turned engages the pin [a and enables the sleeve to move the trigger to release the pin 0 and the detent levers.
The sleeve H is hollowed out at the base disks G when moved by their respecfor locking the safe. I i
, timers.
When the sleeve H is turned by the-trip ,is of such length that the pin will not move below it. The pin 6, therefore, holds, the
- trigger and sleeve H from being returned to locked position, until the pin 6 is raised above the level of the shoulder '2', when the spring H will cause the sleeve H to return to the position shown in Fig. 9, turning the trigger to bring the shoulder z' beneath the pin 6 and cause a plain portion of the periphery of the disk [L3 to engagethe concavesurface of the part 2" of the trigger. The parts will then be in proper position It will be seen in the construction which has been just described, that the trip levers are held against possible movement by reason of jar caused by hammering upon the safe. or by the use of an explosive. It will also be seen that the trigger 1S likewlse held from movement unless moved by the Hence the trigger and bolt work are securely locked until released by the time mechanism. The trip levers may also be held and moved at the proper time by constructions shown in Figs. 11 to 1% inclusive. In this form of my invention the trip levers F are each provided with a pin F'" and the disks G are each provided w1th a groove upon'its underside with which the pin F engages. The pin is set at an angle to a line passing.longitudinally of the .to turn a short distance to bring the pin against the inner wall of the groove.
y reason of this fact the disk may be con structed as shown. in Figs. 13 and 14, having its outer edges rabbeted away except the portion 9 Fig. 13, whichacts to force the pin inward. In this case the trip levers could be moved by to cause the lower end of the trip levers to swing to the right moving the pin away from the disk G. But this would not cause any results as such a movement of the trip levers would not release the trigger, and their return movement would put the pins F in their normal position. In Figs. 15 and 16 I have shown this grooved disk as employed in connection with a different form of trigger and with different devices between the disks and the trigger. In this construction the pin f is mounted upon .a slide F which is provided vwith a slot through which the winding arborof the timer passes and the disk G is reversed in position so that the slide, when its pin f engages withthe angular portion of its groove, will move down wardinstead, of upward. Under the lower end of the slide F of the central timer is a stud T and to the top of this stud is pivoted the left end of a bar or lever K. i The opposite end of this bar or lever is pivoted to the slide F of the timer at the right. 'Anotherbarli is pivoted to the lower end of the: slides of the other two timers, The trigger is an arm K depending froma bar K the outer ends of which bar are pivoted to bars K, K near their respective centers. To the lower end ofjthe arm K is the pivbeyond the arm and forming a shoulder. This block is provided further with the shoulder shown in dotted lines, which engages a pin k to hold the point from turning downward beyond a certain point but permits it to turn upward to allow the pin 6 of the secondary detent lever to pass after which it will return to the normal position shown in Fig. 15 and hold the detent lever and bolt work in locked position.
Should all of the timers act the two at the 1 left will draw the bar K upward while the timer at the right willforce the outerend' of the bar K downward tilting the arm K to oted block k having the point 70 projecting i the left and moving the point [r from under same result would be obtained. It will also be seen thatno ar from hammering or the use of explosives that does not destroy the lock will through slide F free the detent mechanism and permit the unlocking of the safe.
About the timer and connected parts is placed an inclosing casing L best seenin Fig.1 and in dotted lines, Fig. 2, and this casingis provided with a hinged glass cover L partially shown in Fig. l as forming a part 'of the casing L. Thecasing L has apertures below the plate C through which the bolts B B pass. The casing forms above the plate G a perfectly dust proof compartment for the timers and the parts moved thereby.
