1 B. A. BAXTER.
1 STOVE DOOR.
Patented Oct. 23, 18188.
Warren @ra'rns Fnrhnir Orrrcn.
BERRY A. BAXTER, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
STOVE-DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,574,, dated October 23, 1888.
(No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BERRY A. BAXTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mans field, in the county of Itiohland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to stovedoors, and is especially intended as an improvement upon my prior patent, in which the doors are made to co-operate in the opening and shutting op eration.
The object of my present invention is to provide a much more cheap, simple, and durable device; and, having this end in view, I have provided the novel features and combination of parts more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my invention in which the doors are shown open; Fig. 2, a similar view showing them closed, and Fig. 3 a modification.
The reference-letter (t represents the body portion of an ordinary bakingstove, and I) the oven. The doors a d are hinged at 6, above and below the mouth of the oven, and are connected together by means of a pair of jointed bars, fand g. The lower bar, 9, is rigidly secured to the door (I, and is by preference curved inwardly. The free ends it of the connectingbars f and g are hinged together in the usual manner. The lower end of the barf is pro vided with a rearward extension, 2', having a lug or detent, j, which engages a vertical strip or bead, 7t, forming part of the body portion of the stove; or this strip may be the edge of the front wall of the oven, or, in fact, any suitable projection with which the lug 3' can engage to hold the doors open.
In lieu of the arresting device at the joined ends of the links an arm, K, upon the under side of the door-hinge could be substituted and arranged to come in contact with an abutment, Z, as shown in Fig. 3, but the form shown in the other figures is preferable.
In opening the doors the lower rigid arm,
lifts the upper door through the medium of the link f, the operation being substantially that of a bell-orank lever, and the links are of such length that when the lower door has opened to a horizontal position the lug j will engage with strip K and hold both doors in open adjustment, as shown in Fig.1.. In closing the doors the operatormay either lift the lower door, 01, or press down upon the upper one, and the weight of the latter bearing down upon the free end of the curved bar will render this operation exceedingly easy. By securing the lower arm rigidly to the lower door all lateral play which would have a tendency to loosen the joints of the bars is obviated, and the necessity of employing a wheel and guideway, such as formerly used, is dispensed with.
It is evident that many slight changes which mi ghtsuggest themselves to a skilled mechanic might be resorted to without departing from the scope and spirit of my invention; hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A stove or oven provided with a pair of doors hinged one above the other, in combination with a pair of bars having their free ends hinged together, one of the bars being loosely hinged to one door and the other bar rigidly secured to the opposite door, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
2. A stove or oven provided with a pair of doors hinged one above the other and corn nected by apair of bars having their free ends hinged together, in combination with a rearward extension upon one of the links and a detent or lug upon said extension, said lug being arranged to engage the body portion of the stove, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BERRY A. BAXTER.
