SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,573, dated December 27, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NILEs GRANGER, of Saratoga, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pole-RestforAnnealing-Ovens,of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate. corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a front view of an annealingoven to which my improvement has been applied, shown with the small door open. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, taken through the line aa, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, partly in section, of the wheel and its stand.

The object of this invention is to facilitate the packing of ware in annealing-ovens.

The invention consists in providing the ordinary pole-rest bar of annealing-ovens with 1 a bracket in which is pivoted a stand or support for a grooved wheel. This pivoted stand and wheel constitutes my improved pole-rest.

In using the invention the pole, instead of being supported directly on the bar, rests in the groove of the wheel, which, by reducing the friction of the pole, lessens the noise and labor of packing the ware.

A represents the ordinary annealing-oven.

B is the large door, which has an aperture formed through it, closed by a small door, 0. The door 0 is hinged to the large door B at one side of the opening through the said large door, and is opened when the ware is to be packed.

D is the ordinary pole-rest bar, which crosses the lower part of the small doorway, and the ends of which are attached to the large door B at the opposite sides of the said doorway. As heretofore used the bar D serves as a support and fulcrum to the packing-pole in packing the bottles or other ware, and wears the pole and causes an annoying noise when the packing-pole is being used.

E isa right-angled bracket or knee-plate, the upper arm of which is secured to the bar D by bolts or rivets, with the lower arm projecting inward. In the inwardly-projecting arm of the bracket E is formed a hole to receive the pivot F, formed upon the lower side of the base G of the wheel-stand.

To the upper side of the base G are attached, or upon it are formed, the lower ends of two short parallel posts, H, to and between the upper ends of which is pivoted the wheel I.

The face of the wheel I is grooved to receive the packing-pole, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The wheel I thus serves as a support and fulcrum to the packing-pole,and enables the operator to easily direct the pole into any desired part of the oven, so that the packing can be done much more quickly than when the packing-pole is used in the ordinary manner. The use of the wheel I also prevents any noise in using the pole and any wear of the pole when being used. With this construction the wheel-stand and wheel can be readily moved from one oven to another, so that one wheel will servefor a set of ovens.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A pole-rest for annealing-ovens, made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of a pivoted stand and grooved wheel, operated as set forth.

2. In a-pole-rest for an annealing-oven, the combination,with the bar D, attached to the door of the oven, of a bracket, E, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the pivoted stand ot'awheel pole-rest can be connected with the said bar, as set forth.

3. In a pole-rest for an annealing-oven, the combination, with the bracket E, attached to the door-bar D, of the pivoted stand F G H and the wheel I, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the packing-pole will be supported and can be readily operated, as set forth.

4. In a pole-rest for an annealing-oven, the wheel-stand, constructed with a pivot, F, upon its base G, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said stand can be turned upon its support to give any desired direction to the wheel and packing-pole, as set forth.
