A principle object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus for a home craftsman to easily himself remove a piston pin from a head of a piston so that the piston can be disconnected from a connecting rod.
Another object is to provide a piston pin press that can quickly do the intended task without requiring any strength or exertion by a home craftsman that does his own engine repair work.
Still another object is to provide a piston pin press that is small and compact so that it takes up only a minimum space.
Other objects are to provide a piston pin press that is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will be readily evident upon a study of the following specification and the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a side view of the invention.
FIG. 2 is a rear view thereof.
FIG. 3 is a top view of a jack retracting tool associated therewith.
FIG. 4 is a detail view of the jack push pin.
FIG. 5 is an end view of a connecting rod holder.
FIG. 6 is a side view of a modified design of the invention in which the piston is supported one half way around so that the piston is not deformed in its roundness, and wherein the piston is self adjustable so that piston pin is axially aligned with the press ram rod.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, and more particularly to FIGS. 1 to 5 thereof at this time, the reference numeral 10 represents a piston pin press according to the present invention and which is used for removing a piston pin 11 from a head of a piston 12 so that the connecting rod 13 can be disconnected therefrom.
The press 10 includes an upright, stationary frame 14 having a horizontal platform 15 upon which a 3 ton hydraulic jack 16 is mounted in a vertical position so that the piston rod 17 of the jack extends upwardly while the jack hydraulic cylinder 18 is firmly secured to the platform. The upper end of the rod 17 has a screw thread 19 upon which a press pin unit 20 is screwed for bearing against the piston pin 11 so to remove it. The press pin unit 20 consists of an internally threaded cap 21 integral with one end of a press pin 22 which has a thinner diameter opposite end 23 so that it can be inserted into an opening 24 of the pin 11. Accordingly, there is a square shoulder 25 formed between end 23 and an end 26 of the press pin, and against which the end 27 of the pin 11 bears during pressing operation.
At the upper end of the frame 14 there are a pair of spaced apart lugs or stops 28 so to form an inverted seat 29 against which a cylindrical side of piston 11 is placed; the diametrically opposite side of piston 11 being held in a seat 30 formed between lugs 31 of a bracket 32 that is adjustably mounted on the frame by means of bolts 33 passed through slots 34 of the bracket and opening 35 in the frame.
A holder 36 is also supported from the frame 14 for holding the connecting rod 13 during the operation. The holder includes stationary plate 37 that adjustably supports a plate 38 by means of a bolt 39 fitted through slot 40 of plate 38 and a corresponding hole 41 through plate 37. The plate 38 is integral with a stationary jaw 42 and adjustably supports a movable jaw 43 by means of bolts 44.
In operation, it is now evident that when the piston and connecting rod are secured with press pin 22, hydraulic pressure from the jack will cause pin 22 to push the pin 11 upwardly out of the piston 12.
After the pin is thus removed, a yoke-shaped hand tool 45 serves to push the piston rod 17 downwardly into the jack cylinder 18. The tool 45 comprises a lever having a handle 46 at one end for holding in the hand. and a pair of prongs 47 at the other end for inserting and bracing into selective openings 48 along the frame 14 so that a cross-brace 49 between the prongs can bear down against the top of the cap 21 as shown in FIG. 1; the press pin 22 extending through a slot 50 formed between the prongs. Thus the jack is retracted.
In a modified design 51 of the invention shown in FIG. 6, the structure of FIGS. 1 and 2 is replaced by a bracket 52 which can be adjustably mounted on a support such as 14 of FIG. 2 frame 14, the bracket supporting flexible metal band 53 that extends approximately one-half way around the piston 12 for a more even distribution of force so to not mar or distort the piston shape, the band being held at one end by screw 54 to a sleeve 55 held rotatably free under a head 56 of a screw 57 threadingly supported on bracket 52 so that when the screw is raised or lowered, the piston 12 is rotated so the piston pin 11 aligns axially with the press pin 22. Alternately, as shown in FIG. 6, the bracket 52 may be independant of frame 14, and a pin 58 is screw threaded in the bracket so to push out the pin 11 when turned. It is to be noted, that raising or lowering of sleeve 55 does not re-align the piston sidewardly, so that the axis of pin 58 always intercepts the axis of piston 12. However, as shown by arrow 59 the piston 12 can be manually shifted sideways. While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it is understood that such changes will be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as is defined by the appended claims.
