SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention is directed to a portable hydraulic press having a recessed base member secured to a recessed head member by elongated shafts. The base member is invertable on the head member to vary the spacing between the base member and the head member. A conventional hydraulic jack is seated on the base member and has adapters on the opposite end for pressing operations. The head member has a central bore to permit pressed objects to pass therethrough and can be fitted with a plurality of adapters for fitting the head member to the work to be pressed.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a portable press capable of a number of pressing operations with the space between the head and base being variable.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following specification when considered in light of the attached drawings.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a top plan view of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a front elevation of the invention;
FIG. 3 is a vertical cross-section taken along the line 33 of FIG. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows;
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 2, illustrating the pressing of a king pin;
FIG. 5 is a vertical cross-section taken along the line 5-5 of FIG. 4 looking in the direction of the arrows with parts broken away for convenience of illustration;
FIG. 6 is a view similar to FIG. 4, with the base member inverted for a different pressing operation;
FIG. 7 is a perspective view of one of the attachments;
FIG. 8 is a perspective view of another of the attachments;
FIG. 9 is a perspective view of still another attachment; and
FIG. 10 is a perspective view of yet another attachment.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures, the reference numeral indicates generally a portable press assembly constructed in accordance with the invention.
The press assembly 15 includes a base member 16, a head member 17 and a pair of shafts 18 which extend therebetween.
The base member 16 has a generally flat portion 19 carrying a pair of spaced parallel end members 20, 21 integrally secured to opposite ends thereof and extending outwardly therefrom. A flange 22 is integrally formed on the free end of the end member and a flange 23 is integrally formed on the free end of the end member 21. The flange members 22, 23 are arranged in aligned relation and extend substantially parallel to the central portion 19. A pressed plate 24, triangular in shape, is fitted into the angle between the end member 20 and the flange 22 and is integrally secured thereto, as by welding, to increase the rigidity of the flange 22 with respect to the end member 20. A gusset plate 25 similarly extends between the end member 21 and the flange 23. The flange 22 and flange 23 are each provided with central bores 26, 27, respectively, for reasons to be assigned.
The head member 17 includes a generally flat central portion 28 with spaced parallel end members 29, 30 integrally secured to opposite ends thereof and extending outwardly therefrom. A flange 31 is integrally secured to the free end of the end member 29 and a flange 32 is integrally secured to the free end of the end member 30. A generally triangular gusset 33 is integrally secured to the flange 31 and the end member 29 while a gusset 34 is integrally secured to the end member 30 and the flange 32. A bore 35 extends through the flange 31 and a bore 36 extends through the flange 32 in aligned relation to the bores 26, 27 and the flanges 22, 23. A bore 37 extends through the central portion 28 with its axis parallel to the bores 35, 36. The shafts 18 have reduced diameter threaded end portions 38 which extend through the bores 26, 35 and the bores 27 and 36 where they are secured by the nuts 39.
An adapter 40 may be fitted in the bore 37 of the head member 17 by engaging the shank 41 thereof within the bore. A cup-like lower portion 42 on the adapter 40 is provided for engaging with various elements to be pressed. The adapter 40 has a central bore 43 extending therethrough to permit an object being pressed to move therethrough when required. A generally cylindrical adapter 44 engages the head 45 of a conventional hydraulic jack 46 which engages the base 16. The adapter 44 has a socket 47 formed therein to receive one end of either of a pair of adapter pins 48, 49. The adapter pins 48, 49 are arranged to engage the underside of a king pin 50 to drive the king pin 50 out of the stub axle 51 on the end of an axle 52. The purpose of having two adapter pins 48, 49 and any additional that may be desired is that the length of the king pin 50 is not standard and the adapter pins 49, 48 must be selected to fit the length of the king pin 50. In FIG. 6, the base member 19 is inverted to decrease the distance between the head 45 of the jack 46 and the head member 17 of the assembly 15. In this assembly, a ball joint coupler 53 is being assembled or disassembled.
The attachments 40, 44 and pins 48, 49 are provided in a number of sizes to permit a selection of the correct members to fit the particular pressing job to be undertaken.
It should be understood that the assembly of the present invention may be used for assembling and disassembling operations which require pressing.
Having thus described the preferred embodiments of the invention, it should be understood that numerous structural modifications and adaptations may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
