Description

(No Model.)
J. OALLAN.
METAL TUBE. No. 388,824 Patented Sept. 4, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BOOTH & HAYDENS,
OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
METAL TUBE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,824, dated September 4, 1888.
Application filed June 12, 1888.
T aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMEs CALLAN, of \Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tubing, of
which the following is a specification.
The improvement relates particularly to tubing of that kind which has two ducts or compartments.
I will describe tubing embodying provement and then point out the novel features in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure l is an end view ofa section of tubing embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is aside view of the section illustratcdin Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the other section thereof. Fig. 4 is an end view of the two sections fitted together, and Fig. 5 is an end view of the completed tubing.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates a semi-eylindric tube-section made in any suitable manner. It may be 2 made by taking a strip of sheet metal, such as brass, drawing it up by means ofdies or other applianees, and uniting the edges of the strip by brazing, solderiug,or other means. Preferably the edges will be joined on the flat portion; but they may be joined on the curved portion,or at thejunction of the curved por' tion with the flat portion. This tube section may be solid, drawn so as to be withoutjoint, if desirable. Thistuoe section A is so formed 5 as that it will be provided at the junction of the circular portion and the [lat portion with lips or flanges a (4. These lips or flanges will extend throughout thclength of the tubesection.
B designates a strip of metal, which will preferably be the same metal as that of which the tube-section A is made. This strip B is bent transversely,so as to be arc-shapedin the transverse section, which forms another tube- 5 section. The tube-section B is fitted into the recess formed between the lips or flanges a a of the tubeseetion A. Owing to the lips IO my imvarious Serial No. 270,871. (No model.)
or flanges, the two tube-sections may be more easily joined than otherwise, and the spaces or grooves formed by the extension ofthe flanges or lips a a slightly beyond the edges of the tubesection B form convenient receptacles for solder employed to unite the tubesections. After the tube-sections have been united,as described, the tubing thus formed will preferably be pressed on the two edges and subjected to dies or other appliances for perfecting its contour.
The tubing maybe cylindrical or of other shape.
The tubing thus made will be simple and cheap, and will have two ducts or compartments, one of which may be employed for gas in a chandelier and the other for electric-lamp wires in such chandelier. The danger ofleak- 6 age from one duct or compartment into the other will be extremely small and may be absolutely avoided if thejointbetween the edges of the strip forming the tube-section A. ismade at the curved portion of this tube-section.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, tubing formed of two tube-sections, one of which is made of a strip bent so as to have a curved portion and a flat portion, and the other of which is made of a strip bent into are shape and fitted and secured against the flat portion of the first-mentioned tubc'section, substan tially as specified.
2. As a new article of manufitcture, tubing composed of two tubesections. one ofwhich is made ofa strip of metal bent to form a curved portion, a flat portion, and lips or flanges ex tending from thejunctions of these two por 85 tions, and the other of which is made ot'a strip of metal bent to are shape fitted and secured with its edges against the lips or flanges of the first-mcntioncd tube section, substantially as specified.
