Definitions

  • ABSTRACT A plural edge structure for use in shaving includes leading and following members, each of which has two flat faces and a straight sharpened cutting edge parallel to the faces.
  • the two members are permanently secured together with their second faces contiguous, and with their cutting edges parallel to one another and in a plane inclined to the second faces.
  • a plural cutting edge shaving system can provide superior shaving characteristics.
  • Such a shaving system includes at least two cutting edges disposed parallel to one another in spaced relation to provide leading and following cutting edges so that both cutting edges are in contact with the face and are successively active with respect to the hair elements being cut during a single shaving stroke.
  • the blade tangent angle of an edge is the angle between the plane bisecting the two planes defining the edge and the plane through the edge and tangent to the skin engaging surface next forward of the edge.
  • the portion of the bisecting plane external to the material of the edge and the portion of the tangent plane forward of the edge are conventionally used in defining the angle so that a blade tangent angle less than 90 is obtained in any practical shaving geometry.
  • the span of an edge is the distance from the edge to the next forward skin engaging surface measured in the plane through the edge and tangent to the next forward skin engaging surface.
  • the exposure of an edge is the distance of the edge from a plane tangent to both the next forward and the next rearward skin engaging surfaces. The exposure may be positive or negative and is reckoned positive when the edge lies on the skinward side of the doubly tangent plane.
  • the leading edge will be itself the skin engaging surface next forward of the following edge, so that its position will in part determine the blade tangent angle and the exposure of the following edge. Further, the following edge will itself be the next rearward skin engaging surface of the leading edge, so that its position will in part determine the exposure of the leading edge.
  • Objects of the present invention include establishing and permanently maintaining advantageous geometric relationships between the edges of a plural edge shaving structure. reducing the cost of such a structure, and providing such a structure that is easily handled and dispensed using conventional shaving equipment.
  • the invention features a plural edge structure including a leading blade member and a following blade member, each member having the form of a plate bounded by first and second flat faces, and each member having a straight, sharpened cutting edge thereon parallel to the faces.
  • the two members are permanently affixed with their cutting edges positioned parallel to each other and in a plane inclined to the second faces.
  • a particular embodiment features two members which have unsymmetrical edges thereon and have passages therethrough to facilitate removal of shaving debris from the cutting edge and are permanently affixed to each other as by spot welding to maintain the distance between the edges at a value in the range 0.03 inch to 0.08 inch and the blade tangent angle of the following edge at a value in the range 20 to 32.
  • FIG. I shows a shaving system including a blade holder and a blade dispenser and employing a plural blade structure according to the invention
  • FIG. 2 shows in plan view the blade structure used in the shaving system of FIG. 1;
  • FIG. 3 shows a cross sectional view of the structure shown in FIG. 2, the cross section being taken along the line 3-3 of FIG. 2;
  • FIG. 4 shows in cross section a portion of the shaving system to reveal details in the vicinity of the cutting edges, the cross section being taken along the line 4-4 shown in FIG. 1.
  • a PARTICULAR EMBODIMENT Shaving system 10 shown in FIG. 1, includes blade holder 12 and blade dispenser M.
  • a plural edge structure I6 according to the invention is conveniently supported in holder 12 for shaving.
  • Replacement blade structures are stored in and dispensed from holder l4 in a manner well understood by most men as well as those specially skilled in the art of shaving equipment.
  • blade structure 16 is made up of two identical members 18 and 20.
  • Member 18 has the general form of a thin plate several times longer than it is wide, bounded by flat parallel faces 22, 24. (In a particular embodiment dimensions are L495 inch X 0.288 inch 0.006 inch.)
  • a sharp cutting edge 26 is formed along one of the longer sides of member 18.
  • Edge 26 is unsymmetrically formed with respect to a median plane through the plate so that it is parallel to faces 22 and 24 but closer to face 24 than to face 22.
  • edge 26 is 0.00l inch from face 24 and 0.005 inch from face 22.
  • planes defining edge 26 are oriented at different angles to face 24 so that the bisector plane 42 bisecting edge 26 is inclined to face 24 at an angle of 4", the sense of the angle being such that the bisector 42 diverges from face 24 in the skinward direction.
  • a number of debris removal slots 28 pierce blade member 18 as does elongated slot 30 used to facilitate holding of the structure in holder 12.
  • Blade member 20 with faces 32 and 34 and edge 36, is identical in all respects with blade member 18, and in particular, edge 36 is parallel to faces 32 and 34 while lying closer to face 34, and bisector plane 44 associated with edge 36 is inclined to face 32.
  • Members 18 and 20 are permanently affixed to each other by spot welds 38, to form plural edge structure 16, the position of the members relative to each other being staggered and such that faces 22 and 32 are contiguous and edges 26 and 36 are permanently maintained parallel to each other at a distance of 0.03l inches and in plane 40 inclined at an angle of l9 to contiguous flat faces 22 and 32.
  • Member 18, with its edge 26, thus becomes the leading member in structure 16 while member 20, with its edge 36, becomes the following member.
  • the angle between bisector plane 44 of edge 36 and plane 40, containing both edges, is the blade tangent angle of the following edge and in the described structure has the value 23.
  • blade structure 16 is held in holder 12 with the two edges 26 and 36 intermediate between forward face guard element 50 and cap element 52.
  • the span S1 of leading edge 26 is established by the position of structure 16 in holder 12.
  • the span S2 of trailing edge 36 is established by blade structure 16 without reference to the holder, the value being 0.031 inch.
  • each blade member by forming the cutting edges unsymmetrically with respect to the median plane of each blade member a lesser total thickness of metal is required for a given edge separation than if the edges were formed on the median plane. This results in an economy of metal use and also facillitates fitting the plural edge structure compactly into holders originally designed for holding single edge structures.
  • the inclination of the bisector angle of the edges to the plane of the blade member facillitates positioning the blade members so that both edges can have both an advantageous exposure and an advantageous blade tangent angle.
  • the permanent affixing of the blade members is advantageous in that it simplifies handling and dispensing of the shaving structure and ensures that the desired relationship between the edges is not impared. ln manufacturing, the blade members are advantageously stamped and sharpened before being joined together. The use of identical members may be advantageous in simplifying manufacturing operations.
  • blade members of other or different thicknesses may be used; the blade members may be secured together in a variety of ways including the use of suitable bonding agents to maintain the established geometry; and/or the blade edge may be sharpened to other or different configurations. Therefore, it is not intended that the invention be limited to the disclosed embodiment or to details thereof but departures may be made therefrom within the spirit scope of the invention.
