To (LZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES MAHON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Itiehland and State of Ohio,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stub Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improved stub for supporting fence-posts; and it has for its objects to provide a device which may be anchored or partially buried in the ground, and having a seat for the fence-post,Wl1ich is bifurcated and adapted to set over on projecting end of the said stubs, which is preferably made of terra-cotta or like material, as more fully hereinafter specified. I

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fence mounted upon my improved stub, the latter being buried in the ground. Fig. 2 is a view taken at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the stub detached, and Fig. 4 a perspective view of one of the fence-posts. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the stub.

Referring to the drawings, theletter O indicates the stub, and 0 the stub. proper, which rises vertically from the base at right angles thereto. The upper portion of the vertical stub on opposite sides is provided with lugs d d, which, with the intermediate portion of the stub, form a seat, H, for the bifurcated end b b of the fence-post B. At the juncture of the l stub c and base 0, on each side, is a fluted rib, c, which strengthens the device at that point and assists in holding it in the ground. The opposite sides of the base l'orm wings c,which mainly hold the device in the ground. The stub is provided with apertures c for the reception of thelower ends, 0, of the braces D, and the fence-post with cycboltsf, for the re ception of the upper ends of said braces. The letter a indicates the horizontal fence-wires, and a the edges which supportthe same. The letter 7 indicates a nut, which confines the braces d to the eyeboltsf.

The stub may be constructed of any suitable material, and is preferably made of terracotta.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A stub for fence-posts, consisting of the base O and post-support e, at right angles thereto, the latter at its upper edge on opposite sides having short lugs d d, forming a seat for the bifurcated fence-post B, substantially as specified.

2. The combination,with the stub G c, having short lugs at its upper edge, of the fencepost 13, slotted at its lower end and seated be tween said lugs substantially as specified.
