Description

2 Sheets-Sheet 2. E. MINNIGK.
FENCE POST (No Model.)
No. 444,781. Patented Jan. 13, 1891..
UNTTnn STATES PATENT Genion.
IDVAR'D MINNIOK, OF SPRING IIIIJLS, OIIIO.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 444,781, dated January 13, 1891.
Application-filed March 3l, 1890. Serial No. 346,052. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD MINNIGK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Spring Hills, in the county of Champaign and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Iron Fence-Posts; and I do declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
Figure lof the drawings is aV representation of the fence-post, and is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the casting. Fig. 3 is a view of the fence, showing the general disposition of the posts.
This invention has relation to iron fenceposts, especially such as are designed to be used in constructing Wire fences; and the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, all as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the main shank or bar ot the post, and B is the lower extension, which is in the form of a blade at right angles to the plane of the main bar, having its sides C C, projecting beyond the lower portions of the faces D D of the main post, as shown.. The main portion of the post has parallel sides.
G indicates a casting which is vertically adjustable upon the main shank or post A, and designed to be driven into the ground in order to securely anchor the post in position. rlhe brace-casting G is constructed with two outwardly-conczwe opposite flanges ll, connected by a vertically-perforated transverse web a.. The perforation l) of the web a re ceives the main shankA of the post whereon the brace-casiingmay be vertically adjusted to accommodatethe setting of the posts to the depressions and raised portions of the ground. The flanges I-I are adapted to stand adja* cent-1y to the edges of the post Aand at right angles to its width. The ilanges on each side of the web are at right angles to the broader parallel sides of the post, and they are pointed and beveled on their edges to facilitate driving into the ground, said beveled edges also aiding to pack the earth between the flanges. Their outer faces are concave and their inner faces are convex from side to side, and when driven into the ground they have a wedging action presenting a broad resisting` surface of such form that the fence is enabled to withstand the force of the highest winds, whatever be their direction. It. will be observed that by the adjustabilityof these brace-castings upon the posts, the latter can be located in constructing a fence, some in high places and others in low places, and still carry the lines of wires in straight or nearly straight parallel lines, thus permitting them to be stretched when necessary without danger of drawing from the ground such posts as may be set in lower ground. The bracecastings being movable can be driven down so that their upper edges will be flush with the surface of the ground in every case without reference to the height of the post above theground. Thcpostandcastingbeingseparate, transportation is facilitated and the labor of construction made lighter as the posts proper may be set in position first, and then the brace-castings slipped on from the top and driven in place, when the posts will be ready for wiring.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The thin parallel-sided fence-post, having the point portion setting` in a plane in the axis of the post but at right angles to its width, as described, and the adjustable loose bracing-casting having the elongated bearing to engage the post and provided with ontwardly-concave flanges adjacent to the edges of said post and standing at right angles to its width and beveled on their inside edges to aid in the packing of the earth between the ilanges, as shown.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in*A presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD MIN NICK.
