CHECKREIN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 384,460, dated June 12, 1888.

Application filed March 9, 1888.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BASIL MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Lafayette, in the county of Ooshocton and State of Ohio, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Gheckreins, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in eheckreins, lines, and appliances for connecting the same to a bridle; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of de vices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a bridle provided with checkreins, lines, and appliances embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, showing a different arrangement of the devices. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of one of the gag'hooks. Fig. 4 is a similar view of one of the adjusting-links.

A represents a pair of gag-hooks, which are provided at their upper and lower ends with transverse slots B O, and have ears or hook projections D on their outer sides, as shown. The said gag-hooks are connected t) the headstall by means of straps E, which are connected 'to the slots B.

F represents the eheckreins, which are composed of the central section, G, the end sections, H, the intermediate links, Lconnecting the central and end sections, and the links K, attached to the outer ends of the end sections, as shown. The said links K are first passed through the bit-rings L and the end sections, H, are passed back and forth through the transverse openings M and N,which are made in the end and near the centers of the links K, so that the latter may he slipped back and forth on the sections H to regulate the length of the said sections.

The links I are provided likewise with transverse slots 0 at their ends and with longitudinal openings P near their centers. the rear ends of the sections H are connected to the slots 0 at the front ends of the links I,

to the slots at the rear ends of said links I, the said section G being engaged when the horse is checked with the hook a on the saddle of the harness, as shown.

When it is desired to check the horse up tightly, the sections H of the checkrein are caused to engage the projecting hooks D on the gag-hooks A, as shown in Fig. 1.

It represents the lines, which are passed through the bit-rings L and have their front ends attached to the links I, as shown in Fig. 1.

In Fig. 2- I illustrate another mode of employing my invention, in which the ends of the lines R are detached from the links I and are attached to the slot 0 at the lower ends of the gag -hooks, thereby giving the driver more perfect control of an unruly horse. The links K enable the eheckrein to be lengthened or shortened, as may be desired, and the gaghooks enable the power of the driver to be so exerted as to force the bit upward in the mouth of the horse, and thereby speedily reduce him to submission.

Having thus described my invention, I claim-- I. The combination, with a bridle, of the gaghooks A, connected to the head-stall, the eheckreins attached to the bit-rings adapted to be engaged by the gag-hooks and having the links I, and the lines passed through the bitrings and adapted to be connected to the links I or to the gaghooks, substantially as de scribed.

The combination, with a bridle, of the gag-hooks A, having the ears or projections D on their outer sides and having the end slots, B C, the straps E, engaging slots B and connecting the gag-hooks to the head-stall,the checkreins attached to the bit-rings engaged by the projections of the gag-hooks and having the links I, and the lines passed through the bit-rings and adapted to be connected to the links I or to the gag-hooks, substantially as described.
