HENRY W. MULLINS, OF NEW DECATUR, ALABAMA.
BRIDLE-IBIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 25, 1914.
Patented Aug. 11, 1914:.
Serial No. 821,016.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY W. MULLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Decatur, in the county of Morgan and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Bridle-Bit; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a bridle bit, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature having means to cause the animal to more readily respond to the driver. in other words, the bit is provided with a pair of linked levers to engage under the jaw of the animal to cause him to stop easily. Furthermore, these linked levers also serve excellently in subduing and breaking wild horses or young colts.
in practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling; within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view in pore aective of the improved bit constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the rings 2.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates the bit bar, which is gripped between the horses teeth and which is provided at its ends with the usual bit rings 2. Said rings 2 are constructed with centrally arranged brace bars 3, which are reinforced by the supplemental bars 4:. Pivoted at 5 to each centrally arranged bar 3 is a lever 6. The outer end of each lever constructed with a rein ring; 7. The adjacent ends of the lever 6 are linked together, by means of one or two links 8, connected to the levers at 9.
In using the improved bit the bit bar 1 is arranged in the horses mouth, while the levers 6 engage under the lower jaw of the animal, and when the reins (which are connected to the rings 7 are pulled upon, the adjacent portions of the levers grip the lower jaw, thereby acting to control the actions of the animal. Where the levers are pivoted to the bars 3, they extend through slots 11 as shown.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is In combination, a pair of bit rings disposed opposite one another, a bit bar integrally and rigidly connecting said rings, said rings in plan view of the bit being at right angles to the bit bar, each of said rings having a centrally arranged bar extending across the diameter thereof and provided with centrally disposed slots, said centrally disposed bars in an end View of the bit being disposed substantially on a 4.5 degree angle, a pair of levers, each pivoted in the slot of each centrally arranged bar and havinga rein ring at its outer end, and link connections connecting the adjacent end portions of said levers, which end portions engage under substantially the center portion of the lower of the animal.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
V HENRY W. MULLIN Vitnesses L. B. SMITH, J. Y. TooN.
