.To all whom it may concern:

. Be it known that I, CHARLES R. FAY, of the city of Auburn, New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspending Devices, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 isaview of myinvention as applied to an object to be suspended thereby. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same; Fig. 3, one of the devices detached, and Fig. 4 a detail of same.

It is usual to snspend heavy objects, as pictures and mirrors, from a rail upon the wall, called a picture-mit by hooks, as a a, supported thereby, and to use for this purpose two hooks attached by cords or wires H H' to opposite sides of the picture or mirror frame K. Suitable screw'eyes are usually set in such frames to hold the lower ends of the suspending cords or wires. It is a matter of great inconvenience and difficulty to get a picture or mirror so hung to assume a position in which its top and bottom are level, because of the difficulty of tying the cords at each side at such a point that they will be of the same length.

The object of my invention is to obtaiu an adj ustable attachment for the cords or wires, whereby they may be secured to the frame,and while still supporting the picture or mirror may be so moved vertically as to level the same. The device by which this is accomplished is shown in the annexed drawings.

A is a stem,which is provided with ascrewthread. It is bent to form a loop at B, through which the supporting'cords H H' pass, and is in its operation is screwed into the object to be supported, while the other` extremity is bentdownward and formed into aloop,0, by which a screw,G, serves to secure it to 't'he supported obj ect. Uponthe threaded stem A a nut, D, is tapped to fit and travel lengthwise. This nut carries a loose collar, E, which is furnished with a loop, F, through which'the cord orwire H is carried and secured. The two cords H Hf, having been cut to about the same length,are severally secured to the hooks a a at their upper extremities, and to the loops F F ateither side of the supported object at their lower extremi` ties, and the picture or other object having been thus suspended is leveled by raising or lowering either or both of the loops F F by rotating the nuts D D upon the stems A A. Of course one side of the frame K K only need be provided with this device, if it is simply desired to level the object; but if any change of, height is desired both sides of the frame should be thus provided.

Having thus describcd my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As an article of manufacture, a suspending device consisting of a screw-threaded stem, A, adapted to be secured at both of its extremities to the object to be suspended, in combination with the nut D, the roller E, andloop F, adj ustably arranged upon said stem, substan` tially as described.
