SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,185, dated October 25, 1898.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrnarville, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Curtain-Pole Adjuster and Support; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a combined curtainpole adjuster and support.

The invention has for its object the provision of a means whereby the curtain-pole may be supported and lowered down within reach of the operator when it is desirous of removing the curtain, thereby overcoming the disadvantage of standing upon a chair or ladder.

With the above objects in view the invention nally consists in the novel construction, combination,and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more specically described.

In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication and Wherein like figures of reference indicate similar parts in the several views shown, in which- Figure 1 is an elevated front view of a window-frame fitted with my improved device and showing the cu rtain-pole supported thereby. Fig. 2 is a side view of the device removed from the window-frame. Fig. 3 is a front view of the device partly broken away and drawn upon a larger scale. Fig. 4f is a side eleva-tion of the same, .partly shown in section. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 6 is a front view of the top of the inner extension-piece, the lower portion being broken away. Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view showing the pivoted stop at the lower end of the outer tube.

The invention consists in the sheet-metal tubes l, which are attached to the windowframes by screws and which are formed from strips of metal having their sides turned over in a semicircular manner, as shown, and leaving an open space within their front and eX- tending their entire length. Loosely fitted within the said tubes are the tubes 2,which are formed similar to the outer,tubes and have their openings of less width than those of the outer tubes. Secured to the lower ends of the said inner tubes are the screws or buttons 3, the object of which is to provide a means of operating the said extension-tubes. Loosely tted within the upper ends of the said extension tubes are the brackets 4, which have loosely pivoted to their lower ends, by the pins 5, the pawls 6. The lower ends of the said pawls are broader than the width of the openings of the inner tubes and are bent over at right angles and are adapted to enter the small openings 7 which are formed within the edges of the said inner tubes and form a means of securing the brackets in place. At the base of the said tubes and secured to either the outer tube or the window-frame are the dogs 8, having the iianges 9 formed upon their lower ends and which are turned upward at right angles, so as to form a stop for the extension-tube and prevent the said tube from coming out. The said dogs are pivoted so that they may be turned outwardly by the small ianges 10, as shown by the dotted lines at the left-hand side of the window-frame at Fig. l.

Should it be desired to lower the extensionpieces and brackets to either remove the curtain and pole or place the pole upon the brackets the dogs are turned to one side and the extension-pieces let down, which will bring the pole within reach of the operator, or if desired to further lower the pole the pawls upon the brackets may be pressed at their upper ends by the fingers, so as to disengage them from the openings of the inner tube. They may then be caused to slide down the inner tube as far as desired.

Having thus fully shown and described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-L In a curtain-pole support, the combination with the outer tube having its edges bent inwardly, the inner tube provided with correspondingly-bent edges and formed with oppo site notches, a thumb-screw passing through the inner tube and adapted to engage with the outer tube for the purpose of holding the inner tube adjustably in the outer tube, the bracket loosely fitting in said inner tube, und the pztwl pivoted thereto adapted to engage with said notches, of the dof: pivoted to the outer tube near the lower end thereof, lluving :t ztnge adapted to extend under the lower end of said tube und provided with t flange forming :L finger-hold, substantially as shown and described.
