UNITED- STATES I PATENT "OFFIC FRED E. BAILEY, OF MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR oE' oNE- HALF TO EVERETT L. BURRows, F sAME PLACE. ,7
GARM ENT-STRETCH ER. Y
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 381,204, dated April 17', 1888.
Application filed August l2, 1887... Serial No. 246,801. (No model.) I
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED E. BAILEY, of Manchester, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Garment-Stretch. ers, of which'the following is a specification.--'
The object of my improvement is to provide a stretcher for trousers and other garments which will possess variousadvantages in points to of portability, adjustability, and convenience in use not hitherto attained.
I will first describein detail a garmentstretcher embodying my improvement, and then point out the various features of the im r 5 provement in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similarletters of reference designate corresponding parts in both the figures.
2o Figure 1 is a perspective'view ofa garment stretcher embodying my improvement in use, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal SQOUlODrOf the said stretcher when differently adjusted;
End garment-clamps, A B, each here shown consisting of a pair of parallel bars connected by clamp-screws,aftera well-known style, have lugs G and D, respectively, attached thereto.
. The lug O has a squared socket, E, adapted to a neck, F, on one end of the extension-brace G, while the leg D has a square hole, H, in
p which the other end of the brace G is fitted to slide. The lug. D also forms a nut, in which works a hand-screw, I, "lengthwise of the brace and against a bearing, J, which forms the head of a pin, K, adapted. for-reception in one of a series of longitudinal holes L formed in that end of the brace.
' The brace ,G consists of end sections, M and N, which are connected to the clamps'A and 40 B, respectively, as before described, and a meis adapted toreceive a pair of headed studs,
S, which project from the adjacent end part i of the end section N, for uniting the said two sections firmly but detachably together, as shown.
of each section M and O, as ,well as in the section N, to receive the pin K'of the detachable bearingJ, and the end of each of said sections: 3 M '0 is also adapted to slide in'the guide-hole of the lug D on the clamp B. Thus the'brace 6o. may be shortened to two sections or one see tion, as desired, its free end in either'case serving to accommodate the clamp B, the headadjusting screw I, and the bearing- J, for ex tending the bracein the usual way. 7 V
' The slotted connection of the sections M and A '0, together with the series of holes for the.
clamp-screw R, permits a varied adjustment of the two sectionswith respect to each other, and in like manner the series of key-hole slots Sin the section N permit the relative adj ust ment of the sections 0 andN.
To stiffen the joint of the sections M and O, I
a U-shaped clip, T, is placed over thesame with its side plates'embracing both sections,
and its yoke-plate formed with an aperture to receive the clamp-screw P, by which it is held firmly in'pla ce. v
Having thus described my in vention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 80.
Patent, is I 1. In a stretcher of the character described, I Y
the combination. of a pair of garment-clamps,
a lug on one having a squared socket, a lug on the other having a squared-guide holaa brace fitted to slide inithe guide-hole and having a neck adapted to the socket, abearing fixed to v o the brace, a nuton the lug with the guidehole, f and a hand-screw working in the nut against;
thebearing, substantially as described.
2. In a stretcherof the character described,
the combination of a pair of clamps,a sectional extension-brace, a nut on one clamp, a hand screw working therein,a bearing for the screw,
and a'pin on the bearing, the different sections 5 of the brace being each formed with a' hole adapted to receive the said pin, substantially as described.
