Description

SAMUEL W. HAINES, OF SPARTA, MICHIGAN.
CABINET-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1912.
Application filed March 26, 1912. Serial No. 686,341.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL IN. Hanvns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sparta, in the countv of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinet-Clamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to clamps, and has particularly for its object the production of a simple means for firmly holding the adjustable portions of said clamp in a set position.
The clamp is especially adapted to be used in connection with holding woodwork in cabinet making and also has for its object the production of a simple and cheap means fo-r supporting the work in an adjusted position.
l/Vith these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed In the drawings: Figure l is a side eleva-- tion of a work clamp partly in section. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary transverse section taken through the clamp. Fig. 3 is a. fragmentary longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of an embodi-` ment of my invention. Fig. 5 is a transverse section thereof.
Referring to the drawings by numerals 1 designates the clamping bar which is provided with a plurality of transversely eX- tending grooves 2 which are adapted to be engaged by the depending flange 3 carried by the pivoted clamping member 4. This clamping member 4 is provided with a bracing web 5 which reinforces the pivoted clamping member 4 so as to relieve the strain upon the clamping member when engaged by the rotating clamping head 6. Thislclamping member 4 comprises a substantially right angle plate which is pivot-- ally secured tothe surrounding casing 7 by means of a pin 8. This surrounding casing 7 is provided at one end with a pair of overlapping lips 9 being secured by means of a rivet l0. A flat spring 11 is secured to said lips by means of the rivet lO and this spring also engages at its lower end the clamping member 4 practically above the depending lip 3 so as to exert an' effective pressure upon the clamping member at the most desirable point whereby the same will be held in engagement with the clamping bar 1. This spring l1 is widened at its end. being slightly narrower at its folded portion as illustrated in F ig. 2. The clamping member 4 carries a hinge section 1Q one leaf of which hinge carries a vertical clamping head 13. Two of these clamping members are preferably employed one of which clamping members carries a sleeve 14 within which is rotatably mounted a screw clamp 15 which carries a head 6.
In Fig. 4, I have shown a modified form of my invention wherein the surrounding casing 7 carries a bridge portion 16 from which is depended a coil spring 17. This coil spring has its lower end seated in a socket 1S formed in the clamping member 4. The clamping member 4 is formed similar to the clamping member 4 as illustrated in Fig. l being provided with a depending lip 3. Of course, this spring 17 is supported by the clamping member adjacent the depending lip 3 so as to effectually cooperate therewith.
From the foregoing description, it will be obvious that I have produced a very eiiicient and durable clamp for woodwork wherein the same may be adjusted to accommodate different sized work. It will also be obvious that the clamps may be easily released from the clamping bar by merely swinging the clamping member 4 upon its pivot thereby drawing the lip 3 out of engagement with the slot or notches Q.
What is claimed is l. A clamp comprising a clamping bar being provided with a plurality of transverse notches, an adjustable surrounding casing slidably mounted thereon, a pivoted clamping member carried by said surrounding casing, said clamping member being provided with a depending lip extending the entire width of said clamping member, said surrounding casing being provided with an overhanging bridge, spring means interposed between said bridge and said clamping member for exerting a downward pressurempon ing casing, a clamping member carried by lill@ Said easing, :L leaf spring' ixedly secured to .mately above said depending lip of said the under side of said lips and engaging' said Clamping` member for rmly holding` said Clamping' member7 Said clamping member lip in engagement With one of said notches. being provided with a depending lip, said In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my clamping' bar being provided with a plnsignature n presence of two Witnesses.
Of tzlll'lVGlSenOllCheS being ldlpted tO I wmf. receive said lip, said leaf spring oelng narrower at the junction of said leaves than at the ends thereof and said leaf spring' engaging said clamping vmember approxi! `Witnesses A. B. CHENEY, JOHN NELSON.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of latents, Washington, .'D. C.
