UNITED ,STATES` PATENT 'OFFICE;

END-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Leners Patent No. 381,057, dated Apen 1o, 188s. fj Y Application tiled January 4, 17888. Serial No. 2517-69. (No model.)
.Zo all whom may concern: f
Be it known that I, JOHN C UNINGHAM, a citizen' of the United States, residing at Manito,
in the county of Mason and State of Illinois,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scoop-Boards and End-Gates, of which the following is a specification.
The invention is a combined end-'gate and ychute or scoop-board for use in hauling corn,
vegetables, coal, and other materials; ,and it.
consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter described, and
pointed out in the appended claim. In the accompanying drawings, Figurel represents a perspective view of the end of a which extend slightly'inward toward the wagon.
The said brackets are made of strapiron, and have their dat ends d2 secured to the extended ends of the cross-bar d by suitable bolts, d3, and nuts engaging the tapped lower ends thereof, the bearing-loop being formed at v the middle portion of each, as shown.
y'E is the combined end-gate and chute, somewhat longer than the sides of the wagon are y high and vprovided with side-boards ee,which Ajournal-bar, the ends of which are rounded and engaged in the bearing-loops d. The front or upper edge, f,'of thebottorn of the end-gate is rounded'and turns and llifts on the rounded upper edge, g, of the end of the' door ofthe l vated position.
wagon-body,when the end-gate is turned 'sofy that thev journals of the bar F are liftedin the loops of the bearing-brackets. v'Ihusthe lower or inner endsfof vthe kside-boards earec'aused tobind on the floor of the wagon and maintain the endgate closed should the fastening. de;
vices, hereinafter: described, vbecome ldisconnected.
G are the vertical ways secured sides of the wagon-bodyr at its end to 'receive the'ordinary end-gate fit-ting therein. When the combined end-gate and chute is used, the Y ordinary end-gate is removed,.the combined end-gate and chuteV fitting between the ways.
It is evident that kshould it be necessary to use the ordinaryend-gate the bearing-brackets can be unbolted from the cross-bar d and the combined end-gate and chute detached therefrom. i
H is a brace-bar extending acrosstheinterior of the wagon-body with its hooked ends engaged in staples or eyebolts h, securedto the 75 sides of the body in front of the end-gate when raised. The purpose of this brace-baris to brace the wagon-box. v
I I arerod's pivoted or swiveled uponthe ends of the transverse bar i, secu/red, to the outer free end of the end-gate. The said rods yhave their free ends hooked at J to engage l yeither the staples B or C on each l sideof the. wagon-body. The hooks J engage thestaples B when the gate E is closed or raised, closing the end of the wagon-body, and the said rods and staples then maintain the gate kin its eleY When the gate islowered, it isy held in position, inclining slightly upward fromy the end yof the wagon by engaging'the hookJ in the staples C. The end-gate can then act as a chute orinclined plane to quickly load or unload the wagon. When dumping, the
end-gate may be lowered, as'described,have
part of the load shoved thereon, and `rnay be e then'entirely lowered by disengaging-the hooks J from thestaples .0, thus depositing its load quickly in the desired spot.' When theen'd` gate is turned down, the side-boards prevent the load from fallingo at the sides. g The endboard constructed as described makes 'a very convenient, simple, yand useful attachment *to` a wagon for loading and unloading the same. y'.
Having describedv myinvention, I claim,- 'Iher combination of the wagon-.body having the upper edge of its rear end made convex, the cross-bar d, secured to the bottom of the body at its rear end and projecting beyond the sides thereof, the bearingbrackets formed from a single metallic strap having its middle portion doubled on itself to form the upward and y inward extending loops d', and having their flat ends brought together and rested on the ends of the cross-bar d, the bolts inserted vertically through said ends d2 and the crossbar, the end-gate having its upper inner edge made convex, the cross-bar F, secured to the JOHN GUNINGHAM.
