WAGON END-GATE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,280, dated November 29, 1881.

- Application filed November 29,1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HAZEN H. PERKINS. a citizen of the United States, residing at Kewanee,-in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVagon End-Gates and Scoop- Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,and to letters or figures of of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective, showing the rear end of a wagon-box, with my improved endgate in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation in the line as w in Fig. 1, with the endgate shown in an opened position. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the rear end of the wagonbox, with end-gate removed. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the end-gate. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view, showing the end-gate in an opened position.

This invention relates to that class of endgates for wagon-boxes which can be turned down to form a scoop-board or shovel-board; and the invention consists in constructions and combinations hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims hereto annexed.

Referring to the drawings by letters, the same letter indicating the same part in the different figures, letter A represents the rear end of an ordinary wagon-box with side-boards A, and with a bar, B, bolted to the rear side of the rear cross-bar, a, so as to projectin rear of the bottom boards, a. The upper edge of the bar B preferably is in about the same horizontal plane as the lower side of the bottom boards, a, of the wagon-box, while its ends I) extend beyond the wagon-box side-boards A.

O is the end-gate, formed of a back or board, 0, stayed by cross-bars o, and provided with side-boards D, having ends (I, which project below the lower edge of the back 0. The side boardsD are at such distances apart that when the end-gate is closed they are exterior to the side-boards A, and serve as stays to prevent them spreading. The side-boards D are secured to the back 0 by angle-irons d and bolts (1, so that they may be easily removed therefrom to pack the parts for transportation.

" E are plates projecting rearward, one from each side-board A, and have each an eye, 0, in its rear end.

F F are slots in the back 0, through which the plates E pass when the end-gate is closed, and which permit of placing the plates E in higher or lower positions on the side-boards A. Metallic plates G, having holes g, are bolted to the board D, so that the plates E will pass through the holes 9 when the end-gateis closed. The plates G may be adjusted lengthwise ot' the slots F, to adjust them to the plates B when adjusted to higher or lower positions.

I I are rods, each with a hook, 'i, on one end, and a head, i, on its other end, and preferably slightly bent at its head end, as shown.

The side-boards l) of the end-gate, when in a closed position, project downward in front of the ends b of the bar B, and thus securely hold the lower end of the end-gate against outward pressure. The plates E at the same time project through the holes 9 in the back 0, so that the hook ends of the rods I may be engaged respectively therewith, and then be turned downward and their lower ends passed respectively beneath the hooks H, to hold the end-gate securely atits upper end, as shown at Fig. 1. By having the eyes 0 in the plates E project through the plates G the proper distance the hook-rods I may be made tobind against the plates G when turned downward to engage with the hooks H, and thus be made to press the back 0 with some force against the rear end of the wagon-box.

By releasing the rods I from the hooks H the end-gate may be turned outward and downward at its upper end until the heads z" strike the plates G and hold it in the open position shown at Fig. 2, in which position the back may be used as a scoop-board or board on which to stand, and which may facilitate the operation of starting to shovel out the contents of the wagon-box.

In turning the end-gate to open or to close it its lower edge rests on the bar B, and is held by the ends of its side-boards projecting be low the ends of the bar B, so that it may be turned thereon as a hinge; and not only when closed, but also while being opened and closed, the side-boards D will act as stays to the sideboards A, and further prevent any of the con tents of the wagon-box falling from the sides of the board when opened. 'WhiIe the endgate is closed the hook-rods may be raised at their headed ends and unhooked from the eyes 0 and the endgate removed entirely from the wagon-box.

By my improved-end-gate, in'case-the wagon is loaded with shelled corn, wheat, oats, &e., when it is desired to dump the wagon and let the grain run out at rear end of box the endgate may be raised or freed at its lower end and swung upward out ofthe way onthehook-rods,

What I claim as new is 1. In combination with a wagon-box ha-ving a bar with projecting ends at its rear end, an end-gate, G,-having side-boards D,with projecting ends d, whereby the end-gate may be hinged to the wagon-box and turned outward and downwardto form a scoop-board,-whioh is, held vagainst backward or downward rmovement bysaid parts, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
