SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 379,965, datedMarch 27, '1888.

Beit known that I, JOHN W. LIPPINCOTT, a'citizen of the United States, residing in the village of Westminster', in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ear-Muffs; and I do hereby declare that the following is, to thev best of my knowledge, a full, clear, andeXact description of the invention, of which the following is a specification.
lVIy invention relates to improvements in the manner of attaching and adjusting earmuffs, enabling these articlesl to be used with greater convenience. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

The muff Ois spread on a frame of suitable shape in the usual manner, having an arm or attachment,D,rnnning vertically to the sweatband from the frame of muff() toalittle above sweat-band, where it is bent,` forming a clasp having teeth out on side, as is shown at ce, and also having ferrule a a, v which'is movable and acts as-a clamp when pushed downward.
The arm or attachment D is composed of two pieces of spring metal, and are held together by pins b b, allowing them to revolve. One of said pieces has projections 'on opposite sides of pivot-pin b b, which fit into correspondingly-arranged depressions in the other piece, 'wherebythey may be locked in position vertically to each other.
As described, the attachment is composed of two pieces, one piece being bent so as to form clasp for fastening to sweat-band, the other piece being attached tol muff, and the` two being fastened togetherin the center by a pin, b b, or a. pivot. By this means,when the attachment is fastened to sweat-band thepiece connected with mui-ff can be forced to revolve until it gets inside of the hat, as shown in dotted line in Fig. 1, Without disturbing the fastening. 4 novel featureof the invention.
dHaving thus described my invention and its object, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is- A The com-bination,with the ear-mufiC,having means for attaching it to a hat, of the arm D, consisting of spring-metal pieces centrally pivoted togethen'one of said pieces having de pressions on opposite sidesof the pivot and the other having correspondingly-arranged projections, whereby they may be locked in` position vertically to each other,snbstantially as set forth.
