Definitions

  • Watkins Attorney, Agent, or FirmFitzpatrick, Cella, Harper & Scinto ABSTRACT Apparatus for heating yarns of indefinite continuous length as the yarn advances longitudinally comprises an arc discharge device positioned in the vicinity of the yam'br' in contact therewith so that the arc follows the yarn or passes through same. Means may also be provided to moisten the yarn with a conductive fluid before the arc is applied.
  • the present invention relates to apparatus for the heating of endless filaments, yarns or the like, hereinafter referred to as yarns.
  • the yarn is either passed over a heated surface or is heated to the desired temperature by means of hot air or steam.
  • apparatus for heating yarns using infrared, microwaves and high frequency waves have been proposed.
  • the yarn may be passed through a discharge distance or arc length which may or may not extend transversely with respect to the direction of movement of the yarn.
  • the electrodes may be arranged in pairs at a certain distance from each other in the immediate vicinity of the yarn or in contact therewith so that the arc directly follows the yarn over a certain distance, or passes through the same, thus to heat the yarn to a desired temperature.
  • the yarn may first be treated with any conducting material, or it may be moistened with conductive liquid by a moistening apparatus arranged in advance of the electrodes. It is also possible to apply textile finishing agents within the arc.
  • the moistening device may be a fog chamber as this assures absolutely regular humidification of the yarn.
  • the liquid may, however, also be applied by a humidified roller, a wick or by capillary tubes; and a regular shape for the arc can be obtained by using electrodes in the form of rings surrounding the yarn.
  • FIGURE of the drawings shows, schematically, a delivery bobbin 1 from which the yarn is extracted by over guiding rollers 3 and 4 by means of a delivery device 5 in the direction of the arrow.
  • the electrodes 6 and 7 are supplied with electric current by a high voltage source 8.
  • the yarn 2 is moistened by wick 9 of the moistening device 10 so that the arc discharge passes along and through the yarn 2 between the electrodes 6 and 7.
  • An important application of the apparatus of the present invention is its application in the texturing of yarns of indefinite length as well as of bundles of filaments consisting of thermoplastic synthetic material, particularly of polyamides and polyesters, by falsetwisting and heat-setting the false-twist.
  • Using an arc discharge distance makes possible intense heat-setting over a relatively short distance, the space taken by the heating device being thereby substantially reduced which is considerably important in false-twist texturing machines having a great number of treatment stations.
  • the same may comprise electromagnetic or electronic control means for interrupting the arc discharge in regular or irregular intervals.
  • Apparatus for heating yarns of indefinite continuous length characterized by means for advancing the yarn longitudinally, and means for providing an arc discharge adjacent the path of the yarn.
  • Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the arc discharge is provided in advance of false-twist means whereby the yarn is heat-set in twisted condition.
  • Apparatus according to claim 1 characterized in that at least one pair of electrodes is arranged immediately adjacent the yarn, that the arc extends in parallel with the yarn.
  • Apparatus according to claim 3 characterized in that the electrodes are so spaced from the yarn that the arc passes lengthwise through the yarn.
  • Apparatus according to claim 3 characterized in that in the distance through which the yarn passes, and in advance of the electrodes, means are provided for moistening the yarn with a conductive liquid.
  • Apparatus according to claim 5 characterized in that the moistening means is a fog chamber.
  • the moistening device comprises a wick transferring the liquid into contact with the yarn.
  • Apparatus according to claim 5 characterized in that the moistening device comprises capillaries in contact with the yarn for transferring the liquid to the yarn.
  • Electrodes are in the form of rings through which the yarn is passed.
  • Apparatus according to claim 1 characterized in that the means for providing the arc discharge are so arranged that the arc extends transversely with respect to the yarn movement.
  • control means are provided for interrupting the arc discharge in regular or irregular intervals.
