Abstract

This invention has to do with a pattern grading machine adapted to be supported upon a table surface at the edge thereof and provided with adjustable slide assemblies, one of which extending fore and aft of the edge of the table and the other of which is carried upon the slide of the first assembly and running longitudinally on the machine and set to carry a series of finger clip assemblies for grasping the pattern that is to be moved from one station to another either to reduce the size of the pattern or to enlarge the pattern upon a pattern mater lying under the original pattern. The individual finger clip assemblies are connected to the longitudinally extending slide for fore and aft adjustment so that one finger can be extended beyond the other and wherein extensions are provided with this means to have an unusually large adjustment of the finger clip assembly and at the same time be sufficiently rigidly carried and secured to the slide for adjustment therewith. A common operating member is provided upon the slide and adapted to engage clip members on each of the clip assemblies so that the clip assemblies can be opened in unison to allow the pattern to be slid under the same. Extensions are provided on the ends of the slides for carrying further clip assemblies and the common operating member is extended in such a manner as to overlie the assemblies on the extensions from the ends of the longitudinally extending slide. A clamping nut for holding the finger clip assemblies on the longitudinally slide may also serve to hold the clip assemblies extensions on the ends of the slides in their adjusted position and at the same time the supports for the clip assemblies on the slide can be longitudinally adjustable along the slide. The common operating member is mounted on a bracket extending upwardly from the slide and beyond a horizontally extending portion having a slot therein so that the operating member can be operated fore and aft and the upper clip members have extended handles with which the common operating member can engage whereby with any extent of adjustment of the finger clip assemblies the common operating member can serve as the handles and finger clip assemblies. The common operating member can also extend over and have engagement with the handles of the clip assemblies on the lateral extensions in their adjusted positions.

I It is an object of the invention toprovide a pattern supporting arrangement for a pattern grading machine in which free fore and aft individual adjustmentof finger clip assemblies canbe made relative to the longitudinal slide of the machine and at the same time a common operating member for-the several clip assemblies can be'effective regardless of theextent to which the finger clip assemblies have been extended relative to each other. i t It is another object of the invention to provide finger clip assemblies for a pattern grading machine that can be extended by a hingeable extension member adapted to be folded back on the bottom clip member and held bya common clamping screw serving to hold the clip assembly support upon the longitudinally-extending slide to hold the clip support in its longitudinally adjustable position along the slide.
It is still another object of the invention to provide in a pattern grading machine, a pattern supporting assemblage in which the finger clip assemblies for the pattern are adjustable both forwardly and laterally of the machine and wherein there is provided a common operating member that is adjustable fore and aft to depress the top spring clip members of the assemblies regardless of the positions to which the respective spring clip assemblies have been adjusted fore and aft of the machine and wherein the common operatingmember will accommodate clip assemblies that have been adjusted longitudinallyas well. f
Other objects of the invention are to provide a pattern grading machine with pattern supporting arrangement, having the above objects in mind, in which the pattern supporting arrangement is of simple construc-' tion, has a minimum number of parts, easy to assemble and adjust, Iig'ht'in weight, rugged and durable, easy to operate, be depressed by asingle press plate or button arrangement to hold the finger assemblies in unison regardless of their adjustment on the longitudinally extending slide, efficient and effective in use For a better understanding of the invention,;reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

Referring now particularly to FIGS. 1 to 4, l0 represents a metal base plate having a U-shaped flange 11 extending along its rear edge that supports a series of clamping screws 12 adapted to engage the underface of the edge of a table over-which thefbase plate 10 is extended to lie in a flat manner. Upon the base plate 10 and extending forwardly from the flanged edge thereof there is fixed a bottom guide way 13 that has a dovetail groove 14 in which a slide 16 is mounted for longitudinal adjustment therein, in the groove 14 there is secured a rack 17 having teeth against which a pinion on the lower endof a hand knob 18 and not shown meshes soas to work the slide 16 through the guideway 14 of the member 13. The member 13 has a scale 19 thereon with which a pointer2l on the slide 16 refers and so that a measured'amount of adjustment of the slide 16 and of the pattern carried thereon in a manner to be described can be adjusted for a foreand aft change of dimension upon" the material to be marked. In order to frictionally hold the slide 16against easy adjustment by the hand knob 18, an elongated member 22 runs along the dovetail of one side of the groove 14 and can be adjusted to different tightness against the slide 16 by screw and lock nut assemblies'23' carried on the side of the guideway member 13.
In order that there canbe a longitudinal adjustment of a pattern carried in the machine in a mannerto be described, there is mounted another slide adjustable assembly indicated generally at 24 upon the slide 16 and extended at right angles thereto and parallel to the flanged edge 11 thereof. i
This assembly 24 comprises a bottom guideway member 25 having a dovetail groove 26 (see FIG. 4) in which a cooperating dovetail slide 27 can be' worked. Mounted in the dovetail groove 26 is a rack 28 with which a pinion secured on the lower end of hand knob 29 and not shown meshes so that as the knob 29 is turned the slide 27 will be adjusted in the dovetail groove 26 of the guideway member 25. In order that the slide 27 can be frictionally retained in its adjusted position an elongated friction plate 31, FIG. 4, is disposed between one side edge of the dovetail groove 26 in the bottom guideway member 25 and one side of the slide 27. This friction plate 31 can be adjusted to different degrees of frictional engagement by bolt and lock nut assemblies 32. Extending from one side of the bottom guideway 25 is a scale 33 with which apointer 34 cooperates to indicate measured distances of longitudinal adjustment of a pattern carried on the assembly 24 in a manner to be described for the purpose of enlarging or reducing a given pattern from one size to another size longitudinally of the pattern and make markings upon the material over which a given pattern is extended. The above description is perhaps covered more in detail in the US. Pat. No. 2,711,588 so that when taken with the present description it will be readily determined the manner in which transverse and longitudinal adjustment of a pattem'held in the machine may be made over new material on which an enlarged/reduced showing of the pattern can be readily made.
The following description will be directed to a pattern supporting assembly indicated generally at 36 that serves to support a pattern sheet 37.
To the top of the'longitudinally adjustable slide 27 and at the opposite ends thereof there are respectively connected forwardly extending spring clip assemblies 38 and 39 of identical construction of one another and respectively secured to the top of the slide 27 by respective fastening screws 41 and 42, FIG. '1 that respectively extend through slots 43and 44 in respectively downwardly bent forwardly extending respective bottom members 46 and whichserve for fore and aft adjustment of the clips 38 and 39. Since the clips 38 and 39 are joined by a common longitudinally extending clip operating member 48 and respective fastening screws 49 and 51, the clip fingers 38 and 39 need to be adjusted fore and aft together in order that the member 48 can be kept parallel to the slide 27 and to the work piece 37. The common operating member 48 is worked by a rearwardly extending press plate 52 secured to the operating member 48 by fastening screws 53 and 54.
Each bottom clip member 46 has an upwardly extending boss 56 to which a depending boss 57 from an upper clip member 58 is pivotally connected by a pin 59, FIGS. 2 and 4. A hairpin like spring 61 is extended about the pivot pin 69 and reacts between the bottom finger 46 and the rearward end of the finger 58 to maintain the top finger 58 in engagement with pattern paper 37.
The top clip finger 58 carries longitudinally spaced pointed pins with respective sleeves 64 and 65 therearound them and adapted to respectively enter longitudinally spaced holes 67 and 68, FIG. 3, to hold a pattern paper 37 in flush penetrated engagement between the lower and upper clip members 46 and 58.
In order that the pattern 37 can be gripped at other locations longitudinally andrespectively outwardly of the respective clips 38 and 39, there are provided respective clip assemblies 71 and 72 adjustably connected respectively to the respective ends of the longitudinally slide 27 in a manner to be described as illustrated in FIG. 1 and retained in their adjusted positions from the ends of the slide 27. These clip assemblies 71 and 72 are constructed identically to the clips 38 and 39 already described in detail and to which all numerals applied thereto can be readily applied as shown in FIG. 3 to the clip finger assemblies 71 and 72. The common operating member 48 is longer than the distance between the clips 38 and 39 and its ends are adapted to respectively extend over the clips 71 and 72 for engagement with their upper clip members 58 so that not only will the clips 38 and 39 be worked by the operating member 48 but the clip members 71 and 72 will be worked and opened by this same operating member 48 in any location to which the clips 71 and 72 are adjusted from their respective ends of the longitudinally extending slide 27 as to the dotted line position of clip 72 as shown at the right of FIG. 1.
The respective clip like assemblies 71 and 72 are respectively carried upon slide extension assemblies 73 and 74 slidably adjustable in and out of the respective grooves of the slide 27. Each of the slide assemblies 73 and 74 have an elongated extension member 76 that has an upper head 77, FIGS. 1 and 3 to which the respective clips 71 and 72 is attached by its elongated slot 44 and fastening screw 42, the clip 71 and 72 being of the same construction as the clips 38 and 39 that have been described in detail above.
The extension 76 extends into a longitudinally extending opening 78 that extends well into the slide 27 from the ends thereof and can be clamped in place in its adjusted position by a clamp screw 81 operable along an elongated slot 82 for clamping the clip 71 in its extended position and a clamp screw 83 operable in an elongated slot 84 for retaining the finger clip 72 in its adjusted position from the right end of the slide 27 as viewed in FIG. 1. The clips 71 and 72 can be adjusted to any extended position and held in place by the screws 81 and 83 carried on the respective extension members 76 as best seen in FIG. 4 and workable along their respective slots 82 and 84 and when tightened down against the top face of the slide 27 will hold the extended clips 71 and 72 in their extended positions. Each of the clamp screws 81 and 83 are provided with a hand knob formation. It should also be apparent that the common operating member 48 is sufficiently long to overlie the clips 71 and 72 at any of their adjusted positions and that these clips will be opened upon the press plate 52 of the operating member 48 to depress the clips 38 and 39 which are rigidly attached to a com mon operating member 48 by respective screws 49 and 51. It should be apparent that the clips 71 and 72 may be adjusted forwardly and rearwardly independently of one another and with respect to the clips 38 and 39 without throwing out of alignment the operating member 48 from being parallel with the slide 27 and still be made to be operable by the common operating member 48. The upper member 58 of the clips 71 and 72 in order to insure the engagement by the ends of the operating member 48 may be rearwardly extended and longer than the top clip members 58 of the clips 38 and 39.
Referring now particularly to FIGS. 5, 6 and 7, there is shown a modified construction of the pattern holding arrangement in which all of the individual pattern finger clips can be extended independently'of each other and to a greater extent and at the same time wherein the common operating bar can be adjusted and kept in full engagement at all times with the clip fingers to permit common actuation of the clip fingers regardless of the extent to which they have been adjusted forwardly from the base structure. In this form of the invention, the base slide structure is generally the same as above described and as shown in the above mentioned patent. This structure includes generally a flat base plate 86 having double bent flange 87 at its rear edge with clamp screws 88 and 89 for the securement of the base plate 86 to the edge of the table. On the base plate 86 is a fore and aft adjustable assembly indicated generally at 91 and comprising a guideway member 92 having a rack 93 over which a slide 94 can be worked to move the slide fore and aft by a pinion operated by a hand knob 96.
Fixed to the forward end of the slide 94 is a longitudinally extending assembly indicated generally at 97 and comprising a guideway member 98 and a slide 99 operable therein by a rack and pinion assembly 101 including a knob that can beturned to adjust the slide 99 longitudinally of the machine and at right angles to the slide 94 of the forwardly extendingguide assembly 91.
Mounted for adjustment along a top guide surface on the slide 99 and adjacent the respective opposite ends thereof are respectively clip support plates 102 and 103 from which there extends respectively forwardly two similarly constructed spring clip finger assemblies 104 and 105 of identical construction which will be later described more in detail.
Outwardly adjustable from the opposite ends of the slide 99 are respective extensions 106 and 107 that respectively have sleeve heads 108 and 109 for carrying adjustable outer spring clip assemblies not shown in full which are identical to the assemblies 104 and 105 and as respectively indicated at 111 and 112 with the grip finger assembly 112 being extended to substantially its full extent in a manner to be mademore clearly apparent in the description of the individual clip finger assemblies.
Each of the clip finger assemblies 104, 105, 111 and 112 each have as best seen in FIG. 6 a bottom clip member 113 that canbe straight as shown in FIG. 6 or can be bent and made of flat stock with its rearward end being bifurcated as best seen in FIGS. 5 and 7 at 114 with its free ends having spaced hinge pins 115 and 116 to which the ends of legs 117 and 118 of a closed end U-shaped extension 119 are respectively connected to the bifurcations 114 of the bottom member The sleeve pieces 102,- 103, 108 and 109 slidably receive a bifurcated end of the member 114, the U- shaped extension 119 and the hinges 115 and 116. When the extension 119 is hinged onto the bifurcated end 114 of the bottom member 113 as shown in FIG. 6 the slot of the bifurcated end 114 of the member 113 is open and a certain adjustment of the finger assembly can be had within the length of the bifurcated end of the member 113 as with the clips 104, 105 and 111 shown in FIG. 5. The extension length 119 is held in place and hinged over the sleeve supports by the knob clamp screw 121, 122, 123 or 124. Upon removal of one of these clamp screws for the respective clips, the U-shaped extension 119 can be released and lifted and hinged backwardly so as to run co-axially through the sleeve and clip extended to still further distance from its sleeve support for engagement with a more distant edge portion 126 of a pattern 127. The clamp screw 124 would have been replaced in the sleeve support 109 as shown in FIG. 5 to hold the clip 112 by its extension 119 against longitudinal displacement from its adjusted position.
The sleeve supports 108 and 109 for the respective clips 111 and 112 are respectively carried upon lateral extensions 106 and 107 that are respectively slidable into end openings on the opposite ends of the slide 99 of the adjustable longitudinal assembly 97. The top of the slide 99 has respectively elongated slots 126 and 127 through which the respective clamp screws 121 and 122 can slide for lateral adjustment of the finger clips 104 and 105. The same clamp screws 121 and 122 that receive the bifurcated and extension ends of the bottom clip member 113 can engage the top run faces of the extensions 106 and 107 to lock the extensions in their extended positions as best seen in FIG. 8. Thus the clamping screws 121 and 122 may be longer than the clamping screws 123 and 124 toprovide for their dual function. t
Extending upwardly from the bottom clip members 113 intermediate their length are boss projections 128 with which boss projections 129 of an upper clip member 131 are joined by a pivot pin 132 and are held squeezed together by a hairpin-like spring 133 carried on the pivot pin 132 as best seen in FIG. 6. The forward end of the upper clip member 131 has pin projections 134 and 135 for engaging the pattern 127' along its edge 126. The upper clip member 131 is substantially long and has a depressible handle portion 131 to open the forward ends of the clip members for receiving the pattern 127'. The handle portions 131' of the upper clip member 131 extend rearwardly under a common operating member 137 so they will be acted upon by the common operating member 137 regardless of the extent to which these clips have been adjusted forwardly from the slide 99. i i
This operating member 137 is in the form of an elongated bar and while supported upon the handles 131 is biasingly suspended by an upstanding rod 138 that extends upwardly through an elongated slot 139 in a bracket 141 that extends upwardly from the slide 99 and is secured thereto by a thumb screw 142. The. slot 139 lies in a forwardly extending horizontal portion 143 of the bracket and the rod 138 is provided at its upper end with'a press knob 144. Surrounding the rod 138 is a return spring 145 which will return the rod 138 and the operating member 137 rotated by the individual springs 133 of the respective clips 104, 105, 111 and 112. The elongated operating member 137 extends over all of the handles 131' of the several finger clips and while engaging all of the handles 131 regardless of the forward adjustment of the finger clips the upstanding rod 138 can slide in the slot 139 fore and aft to be certain of the engagement of the common bar member 137 with all of the clip handles 131'. It should also be noted that the common operating member 137 will always overlie the handles 131 of the extendable finger clips 111 and 112. Once the pattern 127' has been made secure in the clip fingers the slides 94 and 99 can be turned to enlarge or reduce the pattern size upon. the under pattern material on which a mark is made.
It can now be apparent that the finger clips can be adjusted within normal range and by the use of the extensions 119 can be adjusted to a greater degree forwardly and that these finger clips are so constructed and the operating member 137 sufficiently long and operable in its bracket support 141 so as to accomodate all of the finger clips regardless of the extent to which they have been extended to operate them in unison for engagement with the pattern 127'.
While various changes may be made in the detailed construction it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A pattern grading machine comprising a base plate adapted for attachment to a table surface, a slot in said base plate extending forwardly and rearwardly thereof, a first slide assembly having a slide adjustable in said slot in said forward and rearward direction, said slide having a longitudinally extending slot therein transverse to said forward and rearward direction, a second slide assembly having a slide adjustable in said longitu dinally extending slot, finger clip assemblies having upper and lower clip members pivotally connected together, means for adjustably connecting the finger clip assemblies to the slide of said second slide assembly for fore and aft adjustment relative thereto, clamp screws for retaining the clip assemblies in their adjusted positions, a bracket secured to the longitudinal slide and extending upwardly therefrom and having a horizontal portion extending forwardly, a longitudinally extending common operating bar depending from the horizontal portion of the bracket and adapted to be pressed into engagement with the upper clip members of the clip assemblies to open the clip members which lie under the common operating bar.
2. A pattern grading machine as defined in claim 1, and longitudinally adjustable finger clip assembly supports respectively adjustably connected to the respective opposite ends of the longitudinal slide, further finger clip assemblies on said supports, and means for securing these assemblies to the respective support structures for fore and aft adjustment with respect thereto, said further finger clip assemblies having upper clip members and said common operating member being extended in length to overlie the upper clip members of the further finger clip assemblies as well as the upper members of the clip assemblies carried on the longitudinally adjustable slide whereby all finger clip assemblies regardless of the extent of longitudinal adjustment of the further clip assemblies are operated in unison by I the common operating member.
3. The pattern grading device of claim 1 and said common operating member for the finger clip assemblies having an upwardly extending rod, said forwardly extending horizontal portion of the bracket having an elongated slot, said rod extending upwardly through v the elongated slot and having a press button head ments of the clip assemblies.
4. The pattern grading machine as defined in claim 1, and said means securing the clip assemblies to the longitudinally extending slide including sleeve supports secured to the second slide, the bottom members of the clip assembly being bifurcated and adjustable on the supports and extension U-shaped members having their legs hingedly connected to the bifurcations of the bottom clip member and adaptable when extended coaxially with the bottom clip member to slide through the sleeve supports and clamp screws carried on the sleeve supports and extendable through the slots provided by the bifurcated end portions of the bottom clip members and the U-shaped extension for retaining the finger clip assembly in its fore and aft adjusted position either with the extension extended or folded upwardly over the sleeve support.
5. The pattern grading machine as defined in claim 4, and the upper clip members of the finger clip assemblies having long rearwardly extending handles adapted to overlie the U-shaped extensions when co-axially extended.
6. The pattern grading machine as defined in claim 4, and clip assembly supporting structures including extensions adjustable respectively inwardly and outwardly of the respective ends of the longitudinally adjustable slide with said longitudinal slide respectively having elongated slots in which the extensions slide, said clamp screws for the clip assembly sleeve supports engageable with the extensions to hold the same upon the longitudinal slide in their adjusted positions as well as the clip. assemblies in their fore and aft adjusted positions upon the sleeve supports.
7. The pattern grading machine as defined in claim 6, and said clip assembly sleeve support being adjustable upon the top surface of the longitudinally extendable slide and said longitudinally extending slide having longitudinally extending slots for receiving the clamp screws carried by the sleeve clip assembly supports upon the sleeve support with the clip assembly being adjusted on the upper surface of the longitudinally extending slide.

Claims (7)

1. A pattern grading machine comprising a base plate adapted for attachment to a table surface, a slot in said base plate extending forwardly and rearwardly thereof, a first slide assembly having a slide adjustable in said slot in said forward and rearward direction, said slide having a longitudinally extending slot therein transverse to said forward and rearward direction, a second slide assembly having a slide adjustable in said longitudinally extending slot, finger clip assemblies having upper and lower clip members pivotally connected together, means for adjustably connecting the finger clip assemblies to the slide of said second slide assembly for fore and aft adjustment relative thereto, clamp screws for retaining the clip assemblies in their adjusted positions, a bracket secured to the longitudinal slide and extending upwardly therefrom and having a horizontal portion extending forwardly, a longitudinallY extending common operating bar depending from the horizontal portion of the bracket and adapted to be pressed into engagement with the upper clip members of the clip assemblies to open the clip members which lie under the common operating bar.
2. A pattern grading machine as defined in claim 1, and longitudinally adjustable finger clip assembly supports respectively adjustably connected to the respective opposite ends of the longitudinal slide, further finger clip assemblies on said supports, and means for securing these assemblies to the respective support structures for fore and aft adjustment with respect thereto, said further finger clip assemblies having upper clip members and said common operating member being extended in length to overlie the upper clip members of the further finger clip assemblies as well as the upper members of the clip assemblies carried on the longitudinally adjustable slide whereby all finger clip assemblies regardless of the extent of longitudinal adjustment of the further clip assemblies are operated in unison by the common operating member.

The pattern grading device of claim 1 and said common operating member for the finger clip assemblies having an upwardly extending rod, said forwardly extending horizontal portion of the bracket having an elongated slot, said rod extending upwardly through the elongated slot and having a press button head thereon; a biasing spring surrounding the rod and underlying the press button head for supporting the rod and the common operating member upon the horizontal portion of the bracket in an out of use position above the upper clip members permitting fore and aft adjustment of the common operating member along the slotted portion of the bracket to accommodate the operating member to the different fore and aft adjustments of the clip assemblies.
4. The pattern grading machine as defined in claim 1, and said means securing the clip assemblies to the longitudinally extending slide including sleeve supports secured to the second slide, the bottom members of the clip assembly being bifurcated and adjustable on the supports and extension U-shaped members having their legs hingedly connected to the bifurcations of the bottom clip member and adaptable when extended co-axially with the bottom clip member to slide through the sleeve supports and clamp screws carried on the sleeve supports and extendable through the slots provided by the bifurcated end portions of the bottom clip members and the U-shaped extension for retaining the finger clip assembly in its fore and aft adjusted position either with the extension extended or folded upwardly over the sleeve support.
5. The pattern grading machine as defined in claim 4, and the upper clip members of the finger clip assemblies having long rearwardly extending handles adapted to overlie the U-shaped extensions when co-axially extended.
6. The pattern grading machine as defined in claim 4, and clip assembly supporting structures including extensions adjustable respectively inwardly and outwardly of the respective ends of the longitudinally adjustable slide with said longitudinal slide respectively having elongated slots in which the extensions slide, said clamp screws for the clip assembly sleeve supports engageable with the extensions to hold the same upon the longitudinal slide in their adjusted positions as well as the clip assemblies in their fore and aft adjusted positions upon the sleeve supports.
7. The pattern grading machine as defined in claim 6, and said clip assembly sleeve support being adjustable upon the top surface of the longitudinally extendable slide and said longitudinally extending slide having longitudinally extending slots for receiving the clamp screws carried by the sleeve clip assembly supports upon the sleeve support with the clip assembly being adjusted on the upper surface of the longitudinally extending slide.
