I 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DANIEL H. Oownna and JOHN L. NUMER, citizens of the United States, residing at Mapleton Depot, in the county of Huntingdon and State of Pennsyh Vania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gar-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in car-couplings; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing the draw-head in longitudinal section and the interior parts in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the triggersupporting block, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the trigger.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the draw-head having the usual opening in its front end for the entrance of the link. At its rear closed end the drawhead is provided with a transverse shoulder, B, against which the rear end of the trigger-supporting block 0 impinges. This trigger-supporting block 0 is secured within the draw head by means of a transverse pin, D, inserted through the rear end of the same and the sides of the draw-head. The trigger-supporting block has a rear extension, E, whichimpinges upon the shoulder B, above mentioned, and thereby prevents vertical movement of the said block. The bottom of the block at the front end of the same is cut away, as shown at F, thereby providing the shoulder G, which prevents the coupling'link entering the drawhead to too great an extent for the proper operation of the device. In the body of the block we form the downwardly and forwardly inclined recess H, the lower end of which enters the cutaway portion F. The trigger I works in this recess H, and the bottom wall of the recess is provided with a transverse stop or shoulder, J, which is engaged by a similar transverse shoulder, K, on the under side of the trigger, so as to prevent the said trigger from sliding out of the said recess. and of the trigger has a recess cut in one side, so as to provide the extension L, which, when the trigger isin its lowered position, will be The lower arranged on the central longitudinal line of the draw-head, so as to be directly in thepath of the entering coupling-link.
The operation of the device will,itis thought, be readily understood. The pin is supported in the front end of the draw-head by the trigger in the usual manner, as will be readily understood. When the link enters the drawhead, it contacts against the front face of the end of the trigger and forces the same upward in the recess in the trigger-sopporting block. The support of the coupling-pin is thus removed and itat once falls into engagement with the link, as will be readily understood. Vhen it is desired to uncouple the device, the pin is raised, when the trigger will at-ouce automatically slide into the proper position to support the pin in its position. The link will be drawn from the draw-head by the receding car,and the trigger-supporti ng block is allowed sufiticientpivotal play to ride freely over the end of the link as it leaves the draw-head.
It will be seen that we have provided a very simple and efficient coupling, and its advantages will be readily appreciated.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the draw-head having a rear transverse shoulder, B, of the triggersupporting block havinga rear eXten sion, E, adapted toimpinge upon the shoulder B, and the trigger working within the body of said block, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the draw-head, the block 0, secured within the same and having its lower front portion cut away, and having an inclined recess within its body communicating with the cut-away portion, and a trigger working in said inclined recess, substantially as specified.
