CAR COUPLlNG.
Application filed March 12, 1884.
T 0 a, whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES UEBINGER, of St. James, in the county of Gibson and State 'of Indiana, haveinvented a new and Improved Oar-Ooupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists in a spring band or bar secured to the under side of the drawhead, to the free end of which a beveled block is fastened, which serves as alinkguide, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved car'coupling, showing it ready for coupling. Fig. 2 is a side view and longitudinal sectional elevation of two draw heads and couplers. Fig. 3 is a front end view of one of the draw-heads.
A is the draw-head, held in the usual manner on the car B. A sliding block, G, in the draw-head is provided in its rear end with a stem, D, adapted to be forced into alongitudinal opening, E, in the draw-head, which stem is surrounded by a spiral spring, F, which pushes the said block 0 outward. The coupling-pin I is held to slide in an upright casing, G, 011 the drawhead, which casing is provided with a vertical slot, H, through which the staple J of the pin can pass, to which staple ropes K are fastened, and are passed over a grooved pulley, L, on the end of the car, and then extend to the sides of the car, by means of which ropes the pin can be raised (No model.)
by pulling on the said ropes. A rope can also extend to the top of the car. To the bottom of the draw-head a powerful spring bar or strip, N, is secured at the rear end, to the front end of which spring a beveled block, M, is fastened, which is held in front of the outer end of the draw-head by the said spring N, as shown.
the casing G, as shown in Fig. 2.
The operation is as follows: If a car is uncoupled, the coupling-pin I rests upon the block 0, and the entering link 0 presses the block 0 inward, thus permitting the pin to drop through the link. The link slides up the beveled end of the block M, and is thus guided into the draw-head, and thus cars having high and low draw-heads can be coupled. If the draw-heads come together, one block M presses down the other, as shown in Fig. 2.
If desired, the beveled guide-blocks M can be arranged to swing laterally instead of vertically.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with a draw-head, of a spring-bar secured beneath the same and a beveled block secured to the free end of the spring and in front of the draw-head, whereby the coupling-links of high and low drawheads may be guided within said draw-heads, substantially as set forth.
CHARLES UEBINGER.
W'itnesses:
GEORG F. MAURER, W. TEN BARGE.
If desired, the pulley L can be pivoted in
