SPECIFICATION forming'part of Letters Patent N o. 37 6,991, dated January 2\4, 1888.
Application tiled May 27, 1E87. ASerialNo. 239,567. (No morlel.) y
.To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRYy P. ROBERTS, a` citizen ofthe UnitedStates, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches,.of which the following is a full and clear description, reference being had to the accompanying draw` ings, forming part of this specification, in whichy Figure 1k represents' a side elevation of a wrench embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view7 of the sliding jaw detached.
Myinvention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combined nut and pipe wrenches; and itconsists in the peculiar` constructionof the sliding jaw anditsattached sleeve, as I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim. l u y I Iov enable others skilled in the art towhich my invention appertains, I will new describe its construction and indicate the mannerin which the same is carried out. f
In the said drawings, A represents a wrench,
of usual form, having the handle a, the adjustingnut b, the fixed jaw c,and the sliding sleeve d, all ofthe usual well-known construc-`Y tion, with'the exception ofthe sleeve d, which in the present case has a socket, e, formed in its sides, the said sockets terminating in inclined Walls or stops e, the purpose of whichr and the circular sockets will be hereinafter made manifest. f In the construction of many combined pipe and nut wrenches a pin or' bolt has been' passed through the sliding j aw and its attached sleeve, to serve as a pivot upon which saidjaw might turn to more' securely grasp and hold the pipe or other cylindrical object. The construction above mentioned is, however, objectionable in many particulars, but especially because ofv the breaking of the pivot-pins. These difficulties. I have overcome .by constructing the sliding jaw B with'two downwardly-extending wings, f, the lower ends of which are Yprovided with circular heads g,
adapted to fit the sockets e', formed in the sleeve/d. These sockets e are formed nearthe The heads are pressed intothe lsockets in such a mannerthat they and' the vwings are llush with the sides of the sleeved, and ythey are permitted to rotate within the sockets to impart the necessaryk swinging movement to the sliding jaw, whereby the serrated faces of the xed` and sliding jaws may securely grip land hold the pipeorl other cylindrical object `6o between them, the movement of the jaw being limited by they inclined lwallsor stops before mentioned.
Thefshank C projectsfrom the center ofthe I v H fixed jaw, and the sliding jaw B has a' cenA 65 trally-disposed telongated-slot oropening, h, through which said shank passes. l The jawsj` therefore project from' both sides of the cen- .trally-arranged shankandare capable'of grasp- 5 ing cylindrical or angular bodies, asvthe cir# 7o,y
cumstances require. .y A spring, D, secnredto the'sl'eeved, has' its free end passed within the slot or opening h and-bear's'against one of the Walls of the same to return the sliding jaw to its normal position after the pipe has been released.
kBy reason of the-above constructionI am* enabled to produce a strong combi-nationwrench on which all balls or pivot-pins are' dispensed with, andy at the Sametime furnish 8o V means whereby the pivotal movements ofthe sliding jaw are accomplished in a positive and simple manner. Y i 'f Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Y y Patent, is'- `'As an article of manufacture, a combined nut and pipe wrench consisting ofa shank having axed jaw at oneeud, projecting from disposed slot for said shank, said movablejaw. beingfopen front and rear and. provided Vwith two downwardly extending side wings, f,' terminating at the bottom in heads g, a sleeve," d, having sockets formed in its.Y sides near' the 95 center'to receive the heads, the upper portion of said sockets dvergingr npward'ly'to form at the front andV rear ofsaid wings walls or stops for limiting the movement of the movablejaw, and a spring for returning the jaw to its nory 10o mal position, as herein described.V ,u l
