T '0' all'whom it may concern B e'it known that I, \VILLIAM H; BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stonington, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vises, of which the an article wherein the pressure of the article between the jaws of the wrench will automatically force the said jaws toward each other so as to more tightly engage with the said article, means comprising a lever being provided for separating the jaws to permit of the removal of the article from between the jaws of the vise.
' \Vith the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construc tion, combination and arrangement of. parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

The member 2 terminates in a right angular shelf 4, and the said member orlbody 2 at or about its juncture with the leg 3 is formed with a right angularly extending arm 5, the said arm projecting from the body 2 in an opposite direction from that in which the shelf 4 extends. The arm 5 adjacent to the body 2 and adjacent to the end of said arm is provided with suitable openings 6 and 7 respectively, and arranged within the opening 6 is the lower end of one of the members of the vise indicated by the numeral 8, while arranged within the opening 7 is the end of the second member of the vise which is indicated by the nuineral'9. The members 8 and 9 are pivoted in these openings as indicated by the numerals 10 and 11 respectively, and each of the members 8, 9 has its upper extremity preferably widened and rounded one toward the other, providing the jaws 12 and 13 respectively and the inner or engaging faces of said jaws may be serrated so that an article may be firmly gripped between the same, in a manner which will presently be described. The member 8 is provided" with a threaded opening for the reception. of a set screw 14, the said screw contacting with what may be termed the inner face ofthe body 2, to limit the swinging movement of the member 8 toward the said body 2, while bearing between the rear face of the member 8 and the inner face of the body 2 are one or more spring members 15, the said springs being provided to swing the mem;

The shelf 4: is centrally provided with a substantially rectangular groove or channel; 16 which is normally covered by a plate 17, and arranged within the said channel is a bar 18, the said bar passing through an opening in the member 8, below the jaw 12 thereof and also through an opening in the member 9, and the end of said bar which passes through the opening in the member 9 is bifurcated, while the sides of the member 9, opposite the opening through which the said bar passes is formed or otherwise provided with rearwardlv extending brackets 19. each of said brackets having a longitudinally arranged elongated opening 20 through which passes a pivot pin 21 that also passes through openings in thebifurcated end of the bar 18, through a rounded head '22 provided upon one end shelf is also widened, the closing cap con-o forming to the shape of the shelf provides a complete cover for the said elongated portion of the channel as well as its widened outer end, and the said channel, it should be stated, communicates with the inner face of the body 2. The enlarged or widened portions of thechannel are indicated by the numerals 27, and arranged therein, to the opposite sides of the bar 18 are cam members 28 and 29 respectively, the same being secured to the shelf through the medium of eccentrically arranged pivots 2929, and the cam members or dogs 28 are provided with arms 3080 which project be ond the inner face of the body 2. j
The member 8, opposite the opening through which the bar 18 passes is formed with lateral extensions or shoulders 3131, the said shoulders being provided with angularlv arranged openings 3232, and the arms 30 of the dogs 28 are disposed within the said openings, and when the device is in the position illustrated in Fig. 2 and the jaws closed without engaging an object therebetween, the arms are moved by contact with the angular walls of the openings 32 to bring the engaging surfaces of the cam shaped dogs only slightly in contact with the serrated sides 26 of the bar 18, but should an obstacle be arranged between the jaws it will be noted that the jaw 12 of the vise member 8 will be moved toward the inner face of the body 2, rctating the said dogs to bring their engaging faces more tightly into c ntact with the sides of the bar 18. thus firmly gripping the bar and sustaining an object firmly between the jaws. The inner or engaging faces of the camshaped dogs 28 may be serrated to provide a firm grip between the same and between the serrated sides of the bar 18.
In operation, the lever 23 is raised to substantially a horizontal position which movement brings its eccentrically pivoted head out of right contact with the bar 18 and the spring 15 will force the jaw 12 toward the jaw 13, bringing the cam faces of the dogs 28 out of contact with the opposite sides of the bar, it being understood that the arms of said dogs will be swung away from each s e sell "are? resi s? er.-
grooves 30 in the lugs or lateral extensions 31 of the jaw. The jaw 18 may be swung outwardly of the jaw 12 permitting the article to be operated upon to be arranged between the said jaws. After the article is so arranged the jaw 13 is forced toward the jaw 12 and into contact with the said article, which movement swings the member 8 rearwardly against the pressure of the. spring, causing the arms 30 of the dogs 28 to be moved outwardly, forcing the engaging faces of said dogs into contact with the sides; of the bar. Thereafter,'the handle 23 is swung to a downward position, slightly drawing the bar outwardly of the member 9, but bringing the same into tight frictional engagement with the cam faces of the dogs 28 and thus effectively retaining the article between the jaws. As it is impossible for the member 29 to be swung farther outwardly or bring its jaw away from the article between the jaws. any operation upon the article which will tend to spread the jaws will as a consequence force the jaw 12 inwardly toward the shelf, and any movement in this direction, will, it will be noted, tend to swing the arms outwardly and bring the cams into tighter frictional engagement with the sides of the bar. The set screw 14 permits of the adjusting of the jaw of the member 8 so that the vise may be readily regulated to have its jaws properly engage with articles of various sizes.
From the above description. taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In a vise, two pivoted members having their free ends provided with jaws, of a bar passing through openingsin the said members, pivoted dogs having cam faces adapted to co-act with the sides of the bar, said dogs being provided with arms, one of the jaws having lateral extensions formed with angular openings to receive the arms of the dogs and to swing the dogs into contacting engagement with the bar. when the said jaw 'member is moved toward the jaws, the other jaw being provided with spaced ears, and a lever having a rounded head eccentrically pivoted to the ears and connected with the bar, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a vise, two spaced pivoted members provided with co-acting jaws, one of said members being provided with ears disposed to the sides of its opening, the said ears being provided with elongated slots, a pivot passing through the slots and connecting the bar, a lever having a rounded head eccentrically connected with the pivot, sp ring means upon the second jaw member for normally forcing its jaw toward the jaw of the first mentioned member, an adjustable element upon said second jaw member for limiting the movement in an outward direction of the said member from the first mentioned jaw member, the sides of the bar being serrated, and pivoted dogs having serrated cam surfaces disposed to the opposite sides of the bar, said dogs each being provided with an extending arm, the second mentioned jaw having a laterally extending member provided with angularly arranged slots to receive the arms of said dcgs whereby the movement of the first mentioned jaw toward the dogs will rctate the said dogs to bring their engaging faces into contact with the serrated sides of the bar.
