UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. 'S'TIOKNEY, or sr. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BILIYND-STOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,686, dated January 1-7, 1888. Application filedd'nly 5, 1887. SerialNoQdSAlB. (NomodeL) T alt whom it may concern:
Be It known that I, WILLIAM A. STIGKNEY, of the clty of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have inventeda certain new and useful Improvement in Shutter Attachments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrrptromreference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specitaken on line II III, Fig. V, showing part of one of the slats, Fig. II showing the attachment open and Fig. III showing it closed. Figs. IV and V are detail vertical sections,
. Fig. IV showing the slats closed and Fig. V
showing them open. Fig. VI is a vertical section taken on line VI VI, Fig. V. Fig. VII is a detail perspective view of the bracket.
My invention relates to an improved attachment whereby the slats of a window-shutter are held in a closed or open position at will, and being held more or less open, as desired.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents partof the frame of an ordinary window-shutter; 2, the slats, and 3 the round or strip, connected to the slats bystaples 4 or other suitable means.
On the lower end of the round 3 is secured, by means of a pin, 5, or otherwise,-a sleeve,6, within which fits a bolt, 7. Located within the sleeve above the bolt is a suitable spring, 8, which has a tendency to hold the bolt in its lower position. Secured to the bolt, and fitting in a slot, 9, of the sleeve, is a pin, 10, which prevents the bolt being forced out of the sleeve by the spring 8, but which permits .the bolt to move vertically. On the lower end 14 represents a bracket secured to the lower rail of the frame of the shutter beneath the round 3, and which has one or more notches,
. 15, into which the head 12 may be turned, the
neck part of the head fitting in the notches. At the inner ends of the notches are preferavents the rattling of the slats.
bly depressions, 16, into which the neck fits when turned into the notches to prevent accidental disengagement of the parts. The spring forces the neck into the enlargement 16 and serves to retain it there against accidental removal.
The bracket is preferably formed in a half-circle to receive the sleeve 6, as shown in 'Figs. I, II, and III. The bracket has an extension, 20, which rests upon the top of the -lower rail of the shutter, as shown in Fig. I.
This extension is preferably provided with a recess, 21, to receive the lower end of the bolt to insure against the slats being opened by burglars from the outside.
The operation is as follows: When the slats are closed, the lower end of the bolt 7 rests upon the projection'20 of. the bracket 14 and is pressed thereon by the spring 8, which pre- When the slats are to be opened, the bolt is raised by taking hold of the head 12 and the round is pulled outwardly, so that the bolt is removed from over the bottom piece of the shutter, and
the slats are then opened until thehead 12 comes opposite one of the openings 15 of the bracket, and then by turning the round into theposition shown in Fig. III the head or its neck engages with the notch, as specified, holding the slats to this adjustment.
By providing a number of the notches 15 the slats may be opened more or less and held in that position.
I claim as my invention- "1'. In combination with the slats and round connected thereto, a headed bolt secured to the lower end of the round, and a bracket se-, cured to the frame of the shutter and provided with notches to receive said head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the slats and round secured thereto, a sleeve secured on the lower cnd of the round, a headed bolt fitting in'the ICO lower end of the round and provided with a head, and a bracket having notches to receive depression, 21, in which the lower end of the the head, substantially as and for the purpose spring-boltfits, substantially as and for the set forth.
purpose set forth. 4. In combination with the slats and round WM. A. STIOKNEY. 5 secured thereto, a spring-bolt secured to the In presence oflower end of the round, and a bracket seeu red GEO. H. KNIGHT, to the frame, having an extension, 20, with a Jos. WAHLE.
