Description

(No ModeL) Y BENCH DOG. N0.-376,206. Patented Jan. 10, 1888.
WMM/w00@ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID A. VEN, OF HINSDALE, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
BENCH-ooe.
`SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,206, dated January 10, 1888.
Application filed October 6, 1887. Serial No. 251,596. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID A. OWEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hinsdale, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented certairI new and useful Improvements in Bench-Dogs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures oi' reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to providea novel and simplified construction in benchdogs; and the nature thereof consists in providing a hollow easing adapted to besecured upon the bench, ofa lever pivoted to the same, the upper end of which bearsor abuts against the claw-rod, and its lower end adapted to receive the bearing secured to the cam-lever, by means of which the clawis elevated and held .inany desired position, and other' details in the construction, as will be hereinafter fully described.
In'the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by similar letters, Figure l is a side elevation of my invention, and Fig. 2 isavertical section thereof.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the casing, having an annular flange, a, formedv upon its upper end, and through which are 'drilled holes, in order that the same may be securely fastened upon the bench'by screws.
Through the casing A extends the rod B, carrying upon its upper end a'claw-head, b, by means of which the wood or material is held upon the bench. To one side of the casing A, at a suitable distance, is pivoted the lever C, the upper, end of which is grooved to receive the angular side of the rod B, the lower end being provided with elongated openings leading to seats c, for receiving the bearings of the ca1n-lever D. This lever is provided with a cam, d, having a groove cut upon its edge, also receiving the angular surface of the rod B, and is pressed rmly against the same by raising the handle d', attached thereto, which causes the upper end-of the lever C to bite or press against the bar B.
From the foregoing description' it will be seen that the claw and bar attached thereto are raised to a sufficient height, and the cam-lever is raised, causing the upper end of the pivoted lever to press against the claw-bar and holding it firmly in position.
Having fully described my iuvention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent* l. In a bench-dog, the combination of the casing A, adapted to receivetheclaw-barB,and the lever C, pivoted to the casing, the lower end of which is provided with elongated openings leading to seats c, for receiving the bear- "ing secured to the cam-lever D, as and for the purpose described.
2. In a bench-dog, the combination of the easing A, adapted to receive the claw-bar B, the lever C, pivoted to the casing, the lower end of which is forked or recessed and provided with seats e, and the cani d, having aV groove cut upon its edge and provided with the handle d', as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID A. OWEN.
