s'ro'vn PIPE JOINT.
No. 373,9501' Patent d Nov. 29, 1887.

CHARLES H. SWEET, OF LAMAR, MISSOURI.
'STOVE=PIPE JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,950, dated November 29, 1887.
' Application filed July 9, 1887. Serial No. 243.875. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. SWEET, a citizen ofthe United States. residing at Lamar, in the county of Barton and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stove-Pipe Joints, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesto improvements in joints for stove-pipes; and it consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of parts for service, 'fully described hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of a stove-pipe embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a section on the line as x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same, line y y, Fig. l.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the lower and smaller section of stovepipe, and A represents the upper and larger section, the upper end of the said lower section 7 being passed into the lower end of the upper section.
O designates a hollow rib, of sheet metal, which is soldered or riveted on the side of the section A and extends longitudinally of the said section for a considerable distance from the lower end up, and the outer side of the said rib is provided with a series of perforations, c 0, extending the entire length of the rib.
' D designatesa sleeve or collar fitting around the upper section, A, of the pipe, and having an offset, cl, therein to receive the rib on the said pipe, and E represents an angular tube communicating at the upper end with the said offset in the sleeve D and attached at the lower end to the pipe A, some distance from the upper end thereof. The said hollow rib O, which is angular to fit the angular tube E, is adapted to slide within the said tube, (the rear side of the same being open,) and it will be seen that the lower pipe will telescope within the upper pipe, (the upper pipe moving in the sleeve D,)
and the said pipes will be held from-turning with respect to each other by the rib sliding in the said tube or guide E. .The offset d is provided with a small perforation, d, and G designates a leaf-spring pivoted at the lower end to the outer side of the tube or groove E, and having the pin H in the upper end to fit into the perforation d in the offset d and also pass into one of the perforations c in the rib C. It will be seen that any one of the perforations 0 may be aligned with the perforation d in the offset, and therefore the pipes A A may be adjusted to the desired extension and locked in that position by the spring-actuated pin H. The lower end of the spring G being pivoted to the outer side of the tube or groove E, when it is desired to adjust the pipes the said spring may be withdrawn from the perforation d and turned aside out of the way.
It will be seen from the above that any desired adj ustment of the pipes may be made, and yet all the means of adjustment are on the outside of the pipe, and therefore do notinterfere with the use thereof. Owing to the arrangement of the parts of the invention the said pipes cannot-turn in relation to each other, and
therefore the perforations c in the rib 0 never pass out of alignment with the perforation d in the offset d, except longitudinally, as will be seen. There is no perforation of the pipe in this arrangement of the adjusting means, and therefore there is no chance of any escape of gas or smoke into the room.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a s. ove-pipe coupling, the combination of the pipe A, having the angular hollow rib O on the side, provided with the perforations c c, the pipe A, sliding within the said pipe A, collar or sleeve D around the said pipe A, provided with an offset, d, to fit around and slide on the rib O and having a perforation, 01, therein, the tube or groove E, attached at the lower end to the section A and at the upper end to the collar or sleeve D and communicat ing with the said offset d, and the pivoted CHARLES H. SWEET.
