UNTTnn STATES VPATENT @Trueno CHARLES CRISTADORO, OF NFNV YORK, N. Y.
PADI
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,458, dated November 1,1887.
Application tiled December 23, 1886.
To @ZZ whom, it 'may concern.-
Beit known that l, CHARLES Guisranouo, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State ofNeW York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pads, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention consists in certain features of construction, hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
I have herein shown and described my invention as adapted to be used by physicians; still, as will hereinafter appear, it may bc Aadapted for use in many different ways.
Referring to the drawings, Figure lis a perspective of a tablet constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 is a perspective in detail of one of the sections. Fig. 3 is a similar view of several sections connected, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of a tablet adapted for use in a dry-goods house.
A represents a cover, made of any suitable material, to which is secured by any suitable means a tabletsclamp, A.
B represents a section consisting of a series of leaves connected to each other by any suitable device, in this instance an ordinary binding, B, (sce Fig. 2,) and cutaway, as at B, exposing to View (when several ofthe sections B are connected together to form a pad) the subject-mattcr contained inthe following series of leaves or sections: l.Vhcn several of the sections are arranged as shown in Figs. l and 3, any suitable fastener, as at B, may bc employed to connect the series before being mounted within the cover, or, if desired, .the covering may be omitted and the fastening Bis alone einployed. Any suitable device for securing the sections in the cover maybe used; butin this instance, tfor convenience, vI prefer the clamp A. (Shown in Fig. l.)
The leaves Vforming the sections or series of leaves B are perforated, as at B, s0 that they may be separated from the top portions thereof without the removal of the securing device. Taking, for instance, the forni shown in Fig. l, wherein my pad is adapted for the use of physicians, each series or section of leaves pertains to a different disease, and in this instance I have selected several ordinary dis- Serial No. 222,357. (No model.)
eases-such as fevers, chlorosis, rheumatism, constipation, &c.-and at a point above the cut-away portion B2 the name of the disease to which the particular leaf refers is printed, so that upon lifting the'covcr the section relating to each disease is plainly visible, and the tablet may be readily opened at that point. Taking, as an example, the irst leaf, which contains a list of edibles consistent for the paf tient having fever, it will be seen that at the top of the detachable portion is printed in plainwordsDietforfevers77 Belowthetitle follows a list of edibles of which the patient may partake without danger of bad results.
The physician having a patient suffering with fever can detach one ot' the leaves and leave it with the nurse or patient by tearing it along the perforated line Bt.
As some diseases are more common than others, it very naturally occurs that some of the sections relating to the common diseases will be exhausted sooner than the remaining. It is therefore necessary that the sections relating to these diseases be replenished. To do this the tablet is slid from without the clamp A', the fastening B: bentupwardly, and the stubs left from the exhausted sections removed, a'nd a fresh section replaced in the same order as was its predecessor, it being necessary that they should be replaced in the saine order, by reason of the occurrence of the cut-away portions Bl being at different points or distances from the lower edge in each section, in order that a View may be obtained of all the several sections contained in the pad.
In Fig. 4 I have illustrated another purpose of my invention, and one in which it is adapted for use in connection with a dry-goods house, and in lieu of the diseases mentioned articles of apparel, dry goods, and notions are substituted. The operation of this adaptation is, that the salesman when making a sale records it, with his name and the amount of cash received and to be deducted, upon one of the leaves of the series relating to that class of goods, and detaching the lower portion of the leai' turns it over to the cashier or bookkeeper, who also writes his name and amount of cash above the perforation Bl upon the stub, so that by referring each night or at the end of the week to the leaves the order-clerk can see the exact amount of each class of goods on hand, and he, knowing the amount previously# ordered, will be able to `judge Whether or not that class of goods needs replenishing.
Various other uses of my invention will readily suggest themselves to commercial and professional men, and I do not claim or limit my invention to any particular printed matter employed therewith.
I am aware that a pad has been heretofore cut in steps at one edge to form an index to its contents; butin such case the entire pad was of but a single sectiom and I am also aware that legal blanks have been bound in pad form made up of a collection of various forms, sets of which were divided by fly-leaves and separatelyindicated by an attached indexstrip projecting from a fly-leaf of saidsets; and I do not claim either as of my invention. In my construction each leaf of each section bears just above the cut-away portion of its edge the title of the section, so that removal of a leaf does not remove the indicating-charactors of the section, as would be the case were the pad merely indexed. y
Having described my invention and eration, what I claim isl A pad made up of separate independent series of sections, each section having each leaf thereof perforated for separate removal and cut away at the edge, and each leaf of each section bearing-above its cutaway portion a word or Words indicating the subject-matter to which said leaf and section refer, and each of the sections cut to such an extent as to expose the subjects-matter of the succeeding sections of the pad, and all the sections removably bound for separate removal and replacenient, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.A
CHARLES CRISTADORO.
