CLASP FOE BINDING 0R HOLDING TOGETHER NEWSPAPERS, &;c. No. 372,405. Patented Nov. 1, 1887.
N. PETERS. Fholo'lilhognplnr, Wuhingtm DEC NITED STATES ATENT Fries.
OSCAR DIETRIOH, OF CHEMNITZ, SAXONY, GERMANY.
CLASP FOR BINDING OR HOLDING TOGETHER NEWSPAPERS,&.C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372.405, dated November 1, 1887.
(No model.)
To 6026 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR DIETRICH, of Ohemnitz, in the Kingdom of Saxony, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps for Binding or Holding Together Newspapers, Letters, Samples, or other Articles, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a light and easily attachable and detachable clasp for binding or holding together newspa pers, letters, samples, and other articles, and one that will take avery firm hold while gripping only a very small margin.
Figures 1 and 2 in the accompanying draw ings represent, respectively, end and side views of a clasp constructed according to my invention, showing it open. Figs. 3 and 4 are similar views showing the clasp closed. Fig. 5 is an end View, and Fig. 6 a front view, illustrating a slight modification.
The clasp consists of two principal partsviz., a clip, a, and a closing-bar, I), connected by a pin or pivot, c. The clip a is made of a bent plate, which, if not closed by the bar 1), stands with its clamping edges open, as shown in Fig. 1, so that sheets of newspapers, papers of all kinds. letters, samples, &c., may be introduced with a small margin into the open mouth of the clip. The closingbar b is movably connected with the clamp plate or clip a by means of the pin or pivot c traversing through said clamp plate orclip. The bar Z) is of bent shape. Its curve corresponds or nearly corresponds with the curve formed by one side of the bent plate or clip a. If the bar is turned at an angle of ninety degrees (2'. e.,
from the position in Fig. 2 to that of Fig. 4) the bar will by its spring-pressure close the edges of the plate or clip a toward each other, the edges thus gripping and keeping firm together all material introduced previously to the closing operation between them.
In order to secure the closing portion of the spring-bar b, there may be provided small recesses e e at the side edges of the clip a, into Which the spring-bar 7) takes; also, at the back or folding edge of said clip a recess, 6, may be provided for the finger of one end to rest in while opening or closing the barb.
This clip device also affords the advantage of not piercing through the material held. In such cases in which the clip is intended to be used for material requiring a stronger hold the closing edges may be turned toward each other, Fig. 5, or maybe provided with fine teeth, Fig. 6, so as to allow the clip to firmly hold the material introduced.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A clasp or device for binding or keeping together newspapers, letters, papers, samples, and other articles, consisting of a bent or folded spring-plate, a, and a spring-bar, I), pivoted thereto for the purpose of pressing its edges toward each other, substantially as herein described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' OSCAR DIETRIGH.
