BENJAMIN FRANKLIN WESTERVELT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
s rnr LI I IQ MAGAZINE-BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 16,1912.
Application filed April 3, 1911. Serial No. 618,568.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN .VVESTERVELT, a citizen of the United States,
which they are placed to protect them during use and torender their use more .convenient.
The objects and advantages of the present invention will be set forth in part hereinafter and will be in part obvious to those skilled in the art.
The invention consists in the novel articles, constructions, arrangements, combinations and improvements, herein shown and clescribed.
The accompanying drawings referred to herein and forming a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, the same serving in connection with the description herein to explain the principles of the invention.
Of the drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of the binder wit-h the magazine holding device locked in the folding position; Fig. 2 is a corresponding view with the magazine holding device swung to permit a magazine to be placed in the holder; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a magazine held in the holder; Fig. 4 is a section on the line AB of Fig. 3 looking in the direction of the arrows and showing especially how the holding device holds the back of the magazine firmly against the back of the holder; and Fig. 5 is a side view of the holder without a magazine therein.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, illustrating an embodiment of my-invention, 1 indicates a magazine set within the binder 2. The binder comprises the two sides 3 and 4L and the connecting back 5. The back 6 of the magazine sets against the back 5 of the binder.
Means are provided for firmly holding the back of the magazine against the back of the binder, and the embodied form comprises a standard 7 firmly fastened to the binder back 5 at one end thereof. The standard 7 may be of sheet metal and is shown bent intermediately thereof at substantially a right angle to provide at either side of said bend an upwardly projecting part 8 and a T base 9. The base 9 is fastened to the back 5 of the binder in a suitable manner and a rivet 10 is shown as such fastening means.
The upright 8 has an orifice 11 therein,
through which passes a loop 12 formed in the end of a relatively stiff but resilient rod 13, said loop returning back on the rod 13 over the squared top of the standard 8. At the opposite end of the back 5 of the binder 2 from the standard 7 is attached a" standard 14. This standard 14 is likewise shown bent intermediately thereof at substantially a right angle with a base 15 and an upright 16 on either side of said bend. The upright 16 is provided with means for detachably holding the rod 13. In the embodied form it is shown with a recess 17 which enters at the side of the upright and has a sidewise portion 18 and a portion 19 extending at an angle to, and opening into, said portion 18 in the opposite direction from the back of the binder.
Means are provided on the resilient rod 13 projecting inwardly between two leaves of the magazine to press and hold the back of the magazine firmly against the back of the binder. In the embodied form, the rod 13 is shown having two bends 20 and 21 formed therein for this purpose.
The manner of operation and use of the device which I have shown and described is as follows: The binder is laid open fiaton the table with the rod 13 tipped outwardly away from the back 5. The magazine is then opened approximately at the middle, the back of the magazine being placed on the back of the binder, the rod 13 is then rocked downwardly, the bends 20 and 21 passing in between the two leaves at which the magazine is opened. The free end of the rod 13 is pressed down until in line with the sidewise part of the recess 18, and is then moved thereinto and allowed to snap up into the part 19 of the recess. The rod 13 is thus under tension transversely of its length and thereby presses the rounded ends of the bends 20 and 21 firmly toward the back, the resiliency of the rod 13 serving thereby to firmly press the back of the magazine against the back of the binder. In handling the rod 13 it will be seen that the loop 12 passing through the orifice 11 and back over the squared top of the upright 8 prevents the rod 13 rotating and thus keeps the bends 20 and 21 always faced inwardly ready to pass between the opened leaves of the magazine. When it is desired to release the magazine from the binder, the end of the rod 18 pressed out of the portion 19, and along the portion 18 out of the recess 17. Said rod 13 is then moved upwardly, thus releasing the magazine. It will thus be seen that a binder which is simple and strong has been provided which permits the magazine to be easily, and quickly inserted and withdrawn and which holds the back of the magazine firmly to the back of the binder and owing to the resiliency of the bar 13 will hold firmly magazines of greatly varying sizes, while possessing other advantages.
What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
ent rod having one end attached to, but swinging relatively to, one of said standards, said rod having a plurality of short inwardly extending bends formed therein, said bends being spaced relatively far apart along said. rod, said bends being adapted to enter between the leaves of a magazine to press the back of the magazine against the back of the binder, the other of said standards having means for holding the other end of said rod under flexing tension to hold said bends pressing the back of the magazine against the back of the holder.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN WESTERVELT.
