Abstract

An adhesive-applying apparatus is disclosed, wherein a positively rotated roller, disposed within an adhesive bath, is made up by a pair of truncated cones having their respective smaller faces joined together. The working peripheral surface of these cones has cut therein a helical thread, and the adhesive bath is resiliently mounted, for said roller to engage resiliently the last having the shoe upper supported thereabout, as this last is reciprocated relative to said roller.

1 Claim, 3 Drawing figures APPARATUS FOR APPLYING AN ADHESTVE ON UPPER MARGIN OF A SHOE UPPER The present invention relates to footwear making machinery, and, more particularly, it relates to apparatus for applying an adhesive on the upper margin of a lasted shoe upper.
There are widely known apparatus for applying an adhesive, upon the upper margin of a lasted shoe upper, these known apparatus comprising an adhesive bath having mounted therein a roller positively rotated by an appropriate drive, the roller being made of an elastic material and having a cylindrical shape. This roller, as it is being rotated during operation, applies the adhesive upon the upper margin and also upon the insole of the work. The last with the upper supported thereabout is handled manually by an operator.
As it has been already mentioned, with the apparatus for adhesion being of the above known structure, a layer of the adhesive is applied not only upon the upper margin, but also upon the insole, which is liable to affect the hygienic properties of the footwear thus made. Besides, this known roller would not force the adhesive deep into the body of the upper margin, which, in its turn, might affect the strength of the connection between the shoe upper and the shoe bottom.
There is also known an apparatus for machining the upper margin of a shoe upper (a roughing apparatus), comprising a device for fixing a last having the shoe upper supported thereabout, mounted for reciprocation in relation to the machining tool.
It is an object of the present invention to create an apparatus for applying an adhesive upon the upper margin of a shoe upper, which should improve the hygienic properties of the footwear made with the help of this apparatus.
It is another object of the present invention to increase the strength of the connection between a shoe upper and a shoe bottom, by creating an apparatus providing for deeper penetration of the adhesive into the body of the upper margin of the shoe upper.
With these and other objects in view, the present invention resides in an apparatus for applying an adhesive upon the upper margin of a lasted shoe upper, wherein the device for fixing said last is mounted on the framework of the apparatus for reciprocation relatively to a roller positively rotated by the associated drive means, said roller being disposed within adhesive bath, in which apparatus, in accordance with the present invention, said roller is made up by a pair of truncated cones having their respective smaller faces joined together, the working peripheries of said cones having a helical thread cut therein, said adhesive bath being resiliently mounted on said framework, forsaid roller to engage resiliently said last, as the latter is moved relative to said bath.
An apparatus constructed in accordance with the present invention ensures that the adhesive is applied practically solely upon the upper margin of a shoe upper, which provides for desired normal hygienic properties of the footwear made with the help of this apparatus; the apparatus also increases the strength of the connection between the shoe upper and the shoe bottom 1.5 to 2.0 times, owing to the deeper penetration of the adhesive into the body of the upper margin of the shoe upper.
Given below is a detailed description of an apparatus for applying the adhesive upon upper margin of a shoe upper, embodying the invention, with reference being had to the accompanying set of drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 shows schematically a side view of an apparatus for applying the adhesive upon the upper margin, embodying the invention;
FIG. 2 is the plan view on the apparatus shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is an enlarged sectional view along line III-III of FIG. 2.
Referring now in particular to the appended drawings, an apparatus for applying the adhesive upon the upper margin of a shoe upper supported about a last 1 (FIGS. 1 and 2) comprises a last-clamping device 2 and an adhesive bath 3 within which there is rotatably.
mounted a roller 4.
Pivotally mounted on the framework 5 of the herein disclosed apparatus is a two-arm lever 6 carrying a spring-urged cap-supporting abutment 7. mounted on the framework of the apparatus is a counter-supporting abutment 8. The two abutments 7 and 8 are arranged to provide support for the last 1 clamped .in the device 2.
The clamping device 2 includes a counter clamp 9 and a cap clamp 10 between which the last 1 can be clamped.
The counter clamp 9 is rigidly connected with a carriage 11 mounted for reciprocation along guide means 12 supported on the framework 5 of the apparatus. The carriage 11 is connected through a linkage (not shown in the appended drawings, so as not to obstruct the clarity of the view) with the piston rod 13 of a fluid cylinder 14.
The cap clamp 10 is rigidly connected with a carriage 15 mounted for reciprocation along guide means 16 supported by the carriage 1 l. v
The roller 4, which is rotatably mounted within the adhesive bath 3, is meant to apply a layer of the adhesive, upon the upper margin of a shoe upper. The roller 4 is made up by two truncated cones having their respective smaller faces joined together. With the roller 4 being of this shape, it applies the layer of the adhesive solely upon the upper margin of a shoe upper. The periphery of the roller 4 has a helical thread cut therein, which can be seen clearly in the FIG. 3. The thread assists in taking the adhesive from the bath 3 and rubbing this adhesive into the body of the upper margin of a'shoe upper.
The roller 4 is positively rotatable through a universal-joint shaft 17 and a V-belt 18 from a motor 19, e.g., a fluid motor.
The adhesive bath 3 incorporates a pair of journals 20 rotatably received in the respective bearings of a pair of supports 21 carried by an arm 22. The arm 22 is pivotable about an axis 23 mounted on the framework 5.
Upward pivoting of the arm 22 is limited by a stop 24 mounted on the framework 5.
With the adhesive bath 3 being mounted in the above described way, the roller 4 is able to engage resiliently the upper margin of the shoe upper supported about the last 1, as the latter is moved past the roller 4.
The herein disclosed apparatus for applying the adhesive upon the upper margin of a shoe upper operates, as follows.
Also I The last 1 with a shoe upper supported thereabout is brought to rest upon the cap-supporting abutment 7 and the counter-supporting abutment 8, the cap of the last 1 being put into the cap clamp 10. The fluid cylinder 14 is actuated to forward the carriage 11 along the guide means 12, toward the last i. Upon the counter clamp 9 carried by the carriage [I having engaged the counter portion of the last 1, the latter becomes clamped between the counter clamp 9 and the cap clamp 10 under a clamping effort provided by the compression spring 25 and is forwarded by the continuing motion of the carriage 11 past the roller 4, above the latter, the roller 4 applying the adhesive upon the upper margin of the shoe upper.
For the roller 4 to engage the upper margin at a prescribed point thereof, as the last 1 is being forwarded past the roller, and to clear this upper margin at another prescribed point thereof at the end of the passage of the last 1 by the roller 4, the counter clamp 9 and the cap calmpv 10 can be both associated .with cam means (not shown) adapted to control the engagement of the roller 4 with the upper margin.
The roller 4 being made up by the two truncated cones, as it has been described hereinabove, it applies the adhesive upon the upper margin alone. The roller 4 is continuously rotated in one direction (indicated in the appended drawings by an arrow line A), the peripheral speed of the roller being greater than the speed of the travel of the carriage l 1.
This difference between the speeds and the provision of the helical thread in the peripheral workingsurface of the roller 4 are responsible for the adhesive being positively forced into the body of the upper margin.
The upper margin of the shoe upper has the adhesive applied thereupon twice: the first adhesive is applied, when the carriage 11 is moved through its forward stroke toward the bath 3 with the roller 4, and the second adhesive is applied, when the carriage 11 is moved through its return stroke relative to the bath 3. As the carriage 11 is moved through its return stroke, the provision of a stationary stop 26 is responsible for the motion of the carriage 15 relative to the carriage 11, in which way the last 1 is released by the clamps.
What we claim is:
1. An apparatus for applying an adhesive upon the upper margin of a lasted shoe upper, comprising: a framework, a device for positively holding said last, mounted on said framework; a bath adapted to receive a supply of adhesive therein, also mounted on said framework; a roller for applying an adhesive onto the upper margin of the shoe upper alone, mounted within said adhesive bath, said roller being made up by two truncated cones having their respective smaller faces joined together, said cones having a helical thread cut in the peripheral working surface thereof, said thread.
assisting in the forcing of said adhesive into said upper margin; said last-holding device being mounted on said framework for reciprocation in respect of said roller; said bath being resiliently mounted on said framework, for said roller to engage resiliently said last, as the latter is moved in relation to said bath.

Claims (1)

1. An apparatus for applying an adhesive upon the upper margin of a lasted shoe upper, comprising: a framework, a device for positively holding said last, mounted on said framework; a bath adapted to receive a supply of adhesive therein, also mounted on said framework; a roller for applying an adhesive onto the upper margin of the shoe upper alone, mounted within said adhesive bath, said roller being made up by two truncated cones having their respective smaller faces joined together, said cones having a helical thread cut in the peripheral working surface thereof, said thread assisting in the forcing of said adhesive into said upper margin; said last-holding device being mounted on said framework for reciprocation in respect of said roller; said bath being resiliently mounted on said framework, for said roller to engage resiliently said last, as the latter is moved in relation to said bath.
