A frame I0 is arranged for mounting upon a bench or column. From the front of this frame projects an arm [2, through which extends a horizontal shaft l4 journaled in the frame and arm and having secured. on its outer extremity 5 an applying roll It. This roll is shown as grooved circumferentially to furnish spaced annular projections l8 which are preferably grooved transversely upon their peripheries. The arrangement is such that upon the peripheral applying 44) surface of the roll an adequate body of cement or .other coating substance maybe carried for application to the work. The shaft l4, and therefore the roll I6, is rotated from a horizontal shaft 20 turning in the upper portion of the 45 frame It) and in an arm 22 projecting therefrom above the frame-arm l2. Power may be impressed upon the shaft 20 through a pulley 24 fast upon its rear extremity. Secured to the shaft within the frame is a worm 26 meshing with 50 a worm-wheel 28 carried by a downwardly and inwardly inclined shaft 30 journaled upon the frame. At the lower end of the shaft 30, it is joined for rotation to the shaft I4 by bevelgearing 32. To guard against injury caused 64 which projects eccentrically from the outer by clogging, the worm-wheel 28 may be held frictionally upon its shaft between a lower disk 34 fast upon said shaft and an upper disk 30, splined to move along the shaft and forced downwardly by a spring 38 adjustable by a nut 40 threaded upon the shaft to determine the force to be transmitted by the worm-wheel. If undue resistance is offered to the rotation of the applying roll, the friction drive will slip and injury be prevented to the apparatus or to objects caught by the roll.
Attached to the frame-arm I2 and extending below the applying roll I6 is a receptacle 42 for the adhesive. The contents of the receptacle may be renewed from time to time from a tank 44 resting upon a bracket 46. The delivery is through a pipe 48 and is controlled by a valve 50 therein. Journaled horizontally on the receptacle 42 is a shaft 52 carrying a supply-roll 54 fast upon it. This roll is rotatedthrough beltgearing 56 from the shaft I4, it running in the contents of the receptacle and raising this to be delivered by a transfer-roll 58 to the applying roll Hi. The transfer-roll is supported upon a carrier-rod 60, which extends substantially parallel to the axes of the applying and supply-rolls from an arm 62. The arm turns loosely-about apin screw 92.
The work is advanced for coating upon its under side by the roll I6 over a table 94 secured at its rear and forward extremities to the receptacle In t e table is an opening through which the the freshly applied coating will be free from contact with the table. Any drip from the work may find its way into the receptacle through openings at the opposite sides of the depressed portion of the table. To variably determine the width of the margin of the work presented to the applying roll, an edge-gage 98 is provided, this 94 just to the rear of the applying roll by a slotand-screw connection I00. The gage is shown as hooked to overhang the material and prevent its upward displacement. As appears in Fig. 1, width or size designations may be inscribed at I02 upon a vertical wall at one end of the table adjacent to the edge-gage, as a guide for the operator in setting said gage.
To hold or grip the work in such with the applying roll I6 that it will be eflectively coated and advanced thereby, a pressure-roll I 04 is arranged above said applying roll. This pres-. sure-roll is shown as freely rotatable about a spindle I06 extending horizontally between the arms of the forked extremity of a rod I08 sliding in spaced bearing-portions H0, H0 projecting from a carrier-plate II2. The plate is mounted upon the outer extremity of the frame-arm 22 and is pivoted for angular adjustment about the end of the shaft 20, where it extends beyond the frame-arm. It is fixed to the arm in the chosen position by slot-and-screw connections H4, H4. The roll I04 is held against turning about the axis of the rod I08 by a finger II6 projecting from said rod and entering a vertical slot in the plate II2. It is normally spaced from extremity of and below the axis of a shaft 66 rotatable upon the receptacle 42. The roll 58 thus always rests upon the periphery of the supply-roll, receiving cement therefrom but being normally out of contact with the applying roll. This is as appears in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Upon the inner end of the shaft 66 is secured an arm 88, joined by a link 10 to a lever 12 fulcrumed upon the upper portion of the frame. The outer end of the lever may be depressed by a rod I4 arranged for actuation by the operator, as by connection to an unillustrated treadle, against the force of a spring 16, by which the lever and link are normally raised against a stop I1 projecting from the frame-arm 22 over the lever. Movement of the lever is communicated yieldably to the link through a helical spring I8 surrounding said link between a collar I9 thereon and a projection 8| from the lever. The extent of movement of the transfer-roll under the influence of the connections to the rod I4 may be limited by a stop-screw threaded through the arm 68 and contacting with a projection 82 from the receptacle 42. A spring around the screw 80 tends to hold it frictionally against accistop-collar I I8 contacting with the upper beardental changes in position. Upon a lowering of the treadle rod I4, the transfer-roll travels up the periphery of thesupply-roll 54 until it is in cement-delivering relation to the applying roll engagement adjustment of the stop-screw 80.
It may be desired to apply to the work stripes of the coating substance ofdifferent widths. 'For this purpose, the transfer-roll 58 is adjustably mounted transversely of the applying roll, so
through which the work travels. For example, if the pressure-roll is so adjusted by means 01' the slot-and-screw connections III that it is carried to the on by shoulders on the sleeve. The sleeve is threaded upon the carrier-rod 60 and has at its outer end a finger-piece 88 for convenience in rotating it. 8. The combination with a rotatablecementapplying roll,of roll rotatable in the receptacle, an arm movable by the operator and having a rod projecting from it substantially parallel to the axis of the applying roll, a transfer-roll carried by the rod and movable into and out of contact with the applying roll, and means arranged to position the transferroll at different points longitudinally of the rod.
9. In a coating apparatus, opposite members engaging opposite faces of the work and arranged to effect its coating on one face, said members being arranged for relative movement toward and to gather in the wider pocket which between the upgoing side of the roll and the work.
In preparing the apparatus for operation, the coating substance is fed from the tank 44 until it reaches the desired depth in the receptacle 4!. This forces the work against the applying roll, so both itsadv'ance and coating are effected as the result of the rotation of said applying roll. The thickness 01 the applied coating may be varied by adjustment of the delivering position of the transfer-roll transversely of and the applying roll, through the positioning .of the scraper 8. for the supply-roll and by the location of the pressure-roll I relative to the applying roll. 'When the desired length of the work-piece has been coated, the operator releases the rod I4, and the elements return to their initial positions.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as'new and which it is desired to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a coating apparatus, coacting work-gripping rolls of similar width, one of said rolls having a coating-applying periphery, a rotatable roll narrower than the applying roll and delivering a coating substance to the periphery of the applying roll, .and means arranged to vary the position of the delivery-roll transversely of the periphery of the applying roll without varying the relation of the latter to the coacting work-gripping roll.
2. 13. The combination with a rotatable cementapplying roll, of a cement-receptacle, a supplyroll rotatable in the receptacle, a transfer-roll situated between the applying roll and the supply-roll, a movable arm upon which the transferroll is rotatable, a pressure-roll movable into and out of work-gripping relation to the applying roll, a lever by which the movement of the pressure-roll is efiected, and connections between the pressure roll lever and the transfer-roll arm arranged to impart the movement of one to the other.
14. In a coating apparatus, a rotatable applying roll for a coating substance, a rotatable pressure-roll, the rolls being situated with their axes positioned one above the other, and movable sup porting means for one roll arranged to vary the relative positions of the rolls in a direction along the path of movement of the work, the path of movement of said supporting means carrying the justably selected supplied with the'coating subpoints along the path of advance of the work.
16. In a cementing apparatus, an applying roll to whichcement is supplied, a carrier pivoted to swing about an axis paralle l to,that nf theapplying roll, meansafr ed tosecure the carrier in difi'erent angula;i"'positions, and a pressureroll rotatable upon the carrier belowsaid axis and co-operating with the applying roll, the movement of the carrier being eflective to move the applying roll substantially horizontally.
