UNITED STATES PATENT OFFicE.
ALFRED W. HANINGTON, OF RIDGEWOOD, NEW YORK.
SPOON-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,942, dated October 4,1887.
Applicatlon filed June 22, 1887.
To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, ALFRED W. HANING- TON, of Ridgewood, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Spoon-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in spoon-holders for use'with medicine and similar bottles, and has for its object to provide a device readily attached to and detached from a bottle, wherein a spoon may be held in a vertical or horizontal position, if desired, and wherein two spoons may also be held, one vertically and the other horizontally.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, aswill be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device applied to a bottle, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
In carrying out the invention a single piece I of preferably spring-Wire is-bent upon itself to form a substantially-triangular recess, A, an entrance thereto being effected at the front and reduced end through the opening a, produced by the separation or the jaws a, forming the recess. Having formed the recess A, each end of the wire is carried in parallel lines b to the rear, then bent up and carried forward with a curve downward in vertical alignment with said lines I), and the two ends are thereupon carried in toward each other to form the loops b, and, proceeding to the rear, are twisted together, producing a common shank, B, for the twin retaining-hooks B. After the wire is twisted to form the shank B the two ends are carried horizontally in opposite directions, curving outward to form the semicircle D, the extremities of each end, as they'approach, being provided with outwardly-curved eyes d.
In operation the device is attached in ahorizontal position to the neck of a bottle by the Serial No. 242,143. (No model.)
engagement of the semicircular ends D with the said neck, as shown in Fig. 1, the said semicircular portion of the device being of smaller diameter than the neck of the bottle, to spring thereon. I
In disposing of the spoon or spoons they may be held in a horizontal position by pressing the same edgewise between the loops b and the supporting-bars 11 toward the bottle until in complete engagement with the springhooks B and the supporting-bars b, asshown in positive lines, Fig. 1; or. if desired, the
spoon may be held in a verticalposition, either bowl up or down, by entering the spoon edgewise through the mouth a of the recess Ainto the same, turning the spoon in the recess to face toward or from the bottle and allowing the spoon to drop until the enlarged portion of the bowl or handle is brought in contact with the walls of the recess, and the spoon thereby supported, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a spoon-holder adapted for attachment to and detachment from a bottle, consisting of a single piece of wire bent upon itself to form the front recess, A, the supporting-rods b,the twin hooks B, and semicircular ends D, adapted to engage the neck of a-bottle, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a spoon-holder adapted for attachment to and detachment from a bottle, consisting of a single wire bent upon itself to form the jaws a, the open triangular recess A, the supporting-rods b, the curved twin hooks B, overhanging the rods 7), the twisted shanks B, and the semicircular diseonnected ends D, adapted to embrace the neck of a bottle, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
