CHARLES H. BUNGARZ, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
PROTECTING=IRQN FOR STAPLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,392, dated fieptember 6, 1887.
Application filed March .25, 1887.
To alZ whom it may concern: V
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. Bnneiinz, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staples, of which the following is a specification.
In the use of a certain class of staples which are subjected to heavy strains and considerable abrasion, such as whiflletree-staples, much inconvenience is often incurred by the breaking of the loop or part of the staple at which all the wear occurs.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and cheap means for protecting the parts of staples subjected to abrasive strains; and it consists of a detachable shieldpiece in the form of an arch having perforated legs adapted to be placed over the limbs of the staple and its upper part formed to cover the inside of the loop. This part of the shield is made heavy and strong, so as to last a long time before becoming worn through by the ring or other device attached to the staple. These detachable protecting shields when about worn through may be quickly removed from the staples and replaced by new ones at a nominal expense, the staples proper remaining intact, as they are fully protected by the shields thus lasting an indefinite time.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification to which I will now refer more fully to describe my invention, Figure 1 represents a staple provided with my improved protecting-shield applied to a whiifletree. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the staple on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the protecting-shield in section; and Fig. at is a central section through the line a: m, Figs. 2 and 3.
The staple proper, a, is made in the ordinary manner with straight limbs a a, on the ends of which are fitted the nuts I) I). The detachable protecting-shield c is made to conform to the inside of the staple a, the perforated legs c c fitting over and embracing the straight limbs a a of the staple, the ends of said legs resting against the whiffletree (l, or other device or place to which the staple is secured, and the part 0 against which the loopof the staple a. bears, and which receives all the wear strains, is rounding on the inner side, and is made strong and heavy, so that it will last a long time before it is worn through Serial No. 232,421. (No model.)
by the abrasion of the ring 0 or other device attached to the staple. (Shown by dotted lines in Fig. i.)
The ends of the perforated legs of the shield constitute shoulders for the staples, which, by being drawn firmly against the whiflietrce by means of the nuts I) b on the ends of the staple and acting against the opposite side of the whiil'flctree, make the whole very rigid and strong, the staple proper being in no way weakened by the application of my shield thereto, but supported and braced thereby at all projecting parts subjected to strains.
Vhen it becomes necessary to replace an old worn shield by a new one, the nuts I) b of the staple a are removed, the staple drawn out, the old shield slipped off, and a new one placed on the staple, which is then set back and securely bolted in place by the nuts I) I).
In manufacturing these stapleshields it is preferable to cast them in one piece complete, so that they shall be in condition to be applied to the staples as they leave the foundry,
and when they are made of iron malleable iron is preferable for the purpose.
In the drawings I have shown my detach.
able protecting-shield applied to a whiflletree-staple. It is evident that these shields may be used with equal advantage on all staples subjected to heavy abrasive strains.
Having now described my invention, wha't I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A detachable protecting-shield for staples, composed of a single piece of metal having perforated legs adapted to embrace the straight limbs of the staple and constitute shoulders therefor when drawn firmly against the wood by nuts on the bars of the staple, and a rounded heavy part arranged to fit in the loop of the staple, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the staple a, having straight limbs a a and provided with the nuts I) b, of the shield 0, having perforated legs 0 c, with flat ends, and enlarged part 0, fit ting in the loop of the staple, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand, at New York, county and State of New York, this 23d day of March, 1887.
CHARLES H. BUNG-ARZ.
