TACKLE-BLOCK.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented April 24, 1906.
Application filed August 16,1905. Serial No. 274,418.
To (t/Z u't/mt 'it 71mm/ concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Y. HARTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in rFackle-Blocks; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.-
My invention relates to improvements in tackle-blocks; and the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, substantially as shown and described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a central sectional elevation of a tackle-block embodying my invention in a simple form, and F 2 is a side elevation thereof at right angles to Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the straps alone which carry the hook and support the block. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modification of the straps with a hook and a locking-link therefor.
The use of what may be termed flatsided straps,77 like those shown herein, is in itself not new in this art 5 but hitherto, so far as I know and believe, it has been the invariable practice to employ what are commonly known as clevises or shackles with blocks having Hat straps and which carried as a necessary part thereof a straight cross pin or bolt, which engaged or was designed to engage the straight-sided straps. The pins or bolts thus used were separate pieces and removable, and besides being liable to become loosened and lost there was the further liability of their getting turned out of right working relation in or to the strap and to present their rounded portion thereto instead of the straight pin or bolt, and in addition to this it was always necessary to remove the pin or bolt in making connections with other parts, which took time and was inconvenient. Now I have conceived the idea of retaining the flat strap or straps, as with shackles or clevises generally, but employing a hook instead of a shackle and getting all the advan tages and conveniences which the use of a hook affords in conjunction with the manifest advantages of a flat strap therewith.
Of course I am aware that hooks on tackleblocks are .not in themselves new but they have always and only been used with straps that have been fullered down and rounded in cross-section in their hook-engaged portion,
so as to adapt them to be used with the round eye of the hook; but this rounding of the strap required heating to a welding condition, and there followed inevitable weakening of the strap through crystallization of the metal where the welding or rounding began, which very materially impaired the strength of the strap as compared with what it had originally or would have if it had not been subj ected to this treatment. Hence a full-width strap cold-bent to U shape, as shown, is regarded as unich more desirable than those with rounded and impaired shanks, and for this reason I have embodied this style of strap in my invention and developed a hook which can be used therewith Thus in all the figures I show an outside flat-sided strap A, having its neck or shank e bent to substantially U shape, but of the same width and cross-section througlnnit as the strap at other points, and hence unimpaired as to its natural and initial sustaining powers. Vith this is associated an inner flat bent strap C, which may be of a length corresponding to what is shown in Figs. l and 2 or as in Fig. 4, and one or more sheaves B may be employed. Now I have made a hook to conform to these straps and to always hold the right working relation thereto and to be permanently connected therewith, and to this end the said hook D is provided with an engaging loop having a straight cross shank or portion d, having a length equal to the width of the strap or straps with which it is engaged and bearing equally thereon at all points the full width of the strap.
The construction of the hook has the material and novel advantage of providing a block having flat bent straps with a hook instead of a clevis or shackle, as heretofore, and so far as I know and believe no one has ever seen or known a hook to be used or employed with straps of this kind prior to my invention thereof and as herein disclosed and set forth. The using advantage and value of a hook over a clevis is universally acknowledged in this art, and therefore the combination of a hook with flat bent straps is in the direction of a desirable and material improvement. It will be noticed also that the hook and shank or straight engaging portions d are at right angles to each other and that the hook by this construction and arrangement is compelled to sustain only a certain relation to the block. This makes it especially advantageous to employ therewith a detainingdink G,
lOO
Which likewise has a straight portion g adapted to the straps and is of a length and construction to engage over a projection d on the point of the hook and serves to temporarily lock engagement of the hook With an attached object.
What I Claim is- 1. A tackle-block having an outer strap of substantially U shape with a straight transverse bearing at its top, and an inner substantially U-shaped strap lying against the inside of the said hearing7 and a hook having a straight transverse shank engaged in said straps against said bearing.
2. A tackle-block having a strap with a straight transverse bearing and a substantially U-shape auxiliary strap inside resting against said bearing transversely7 said parts formed from' iiat pieces of metal bent to shape, in combination With a hook and a detaininglink having each a straight engaging shank transversely Within said straps.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two Witnesses.
HENRY V. HARTZ. Witnesses R. B. MOSER, C. A. SELL.
