I BUTTON SHOE.
Patented Aug. 30, 1887.
N. PETERS, PhaIu-Lhhagmphor. Wrnhinglon. 04 a UNITED STATES WVILLIAM H. VOODQOF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
BUTTON SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,087, dated August 30, 1887.
Application filed April 13, 1887. Serial No. 234,610. (No model.)
{To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H, WOOD, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this application.
My improvement relates to button shoes, and more particularly to the fly or overlapping part that connects with the buttons. In common shoes of this kind the button-holes of the fly are exposed and open their whole length, and when the shoe has been used a considerable time these button-holes wear and present an unsightly appearance and gape open, showing the stocking beneath.
It is the object of my improvement to obviate these difficulties; and my invention consists in the combination, with the button'fly, of an overlying piece of leather which laps over the inner ends of the button-holes, covering a portion of their length, all as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a shoe, showing my improvement. Fig. -2 is an enlarged face view of a port-ion of the button-fly and the overlying strip. Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-section of the meeting edges of the shoe through one of the button-holes.
A indicates the shoe, and B the buttonfly, the latter being scalloped in the usual way, or plain, as desired.
a a are the button-holes in the fly, of usual form, and b b are the buttons.
My improvement is as follows:
C is an overlying piece of leather attached .to the outside of the fly in any suitable manner, its lower edge resting some distance back from the edge of the fly and overlapping and covering a portion of the length of the buttonelaborately as-is now done; also, and which is of much importance, it covers the unsightly opening and spreading of the inner end of the button-holes, and the consequent exposure of the stocking, that occur in common shoes. When made in ornamental form, it adds to the beauty of the shoe.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a shoe, the combination, with the button-fly, of an overlying piece attached to the fly with its edge overlapping and covering the inner ends of the button-holes, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a shoe, the eombination, with the button-fly, of an overlying piece attached to the fly with its edge overlapping the inner ends of the button-holes, a series of pocket-holes being formed in uniting the parts, whereby a portion of each button -hole is covered, as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM H. WOOD.
