J. H. MoELROY. FASTENING DEVIGE.
Patented Dec. 21, 1897.
eat/WM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. MOELROY, OF MIDDLETOWN, NEW YORK.
FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,832, dated December 21, 1897.
Application filed June 17, 1896. $erlal No. 595,907. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. MCELROY, of Middletown, Orange county, New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improve ment in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fastening devices, and especially to new and improved means of securing boots or shoes whereby a neat fastening of the two parts of the quarter is obtained.
By my invention also I obviate the unseemly appearance of a shoe due to the wearing off of the enamel on the lacing-eyelets.
In the drawings I have illustrated a shoe embodying my invention, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shoe constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the inside of one quarter of such a shoe, and Fig. 3 is a view in section along line m m of Fig. 2.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A represents the shoe, B the quarter, and O a reinforcing-strip placed on the inside of the quarter along the line of eyelet-holes.
In carrying out my invention I cut out the quarter with a supplemental piece 1), adapted to be folded over the reinforcing-strip O, and punch-holes D along the crease formed in the quarter when the same is afterward folded over the reinforcing-piece O. I then secure the reinforcing-piece C to the quarter by a line of stitches c and punch another series of holes E through the reinforcing-piece and the quarter alongside of and a little distance removed from the holes D already made and insert in said holes E brass eyelets. I then fold over the quarter and reinforcing-piece so that the holes D are on the crease or corner thus formed, and then secure the reinforcing-piece and the folded-over portion of the quarter on the inside thereof by a line of stitches 0 When the parts are in this position, it will be seen that the holes E on the inside of the quarter communicate with the holes D, which pass through only the leather constituting the quarter and thus afford a passage for the lace, which shows no brass eyelets on the outside of the shoe.
Although I have shown my invention as applied to a boot or shoe, I do not wish to limit myself thereto, as it will be obvious that the same may be used in connection with other articles of wearing-apparel.
What I claim as new is- 1. A fastening device comprising the folded over edge having a series of holes in its outer portions and a corresponding series of eyelet-h0les in its folded-over portion in rear of said series of holes whereby said eyelet-holes are invisible from the exterior of the article, but communicate with the holes in the outer portion thereof, substantially as described.
2. A fastening device comprising the foldedover edge having a series of holes formed at the bend of the fold and a corresponding series of eyelet-holes in the folded-over portion, said eyelet-holes being invisible from the exterior of the fabric but communicating with the holes at the bend, substantially as described.
3. In a boot or shoe, the quarter folded over and secured to a reinforcing-piece, a series of eyelet-holes passing through the reinforcingpiece and folded-over portion of the quarter and a corresponding series of holes formed only in the quarter at the bend thereof, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to thisspecification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES H MCELROY.
