Our invention relates to certain improvements in machines for centering7 the ends of shafts, spindles, or bars of metal which are to be turned; and it consists in the use of two centering-spindles to which a simultaneous longitudinal movement is given by which both rotating' drills are carriedat the same time to the ends of the bar to be centered, in the construction and arrangement of the mechanism for so moving the centering-spindles, in devices for clamping the shaft, which are adjustable along the bed of the machine, in an adjustable head by which shafts of varying lengths may be centered, and in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, as hereinafter described.

The blocks I are readily removed and others substituted adapted to the different sizes of shafts. Upon the under sides of the saddles G G' are the cani-levers lo k', turning upon studs Z Z in the saddles. and pressing against the shoe L,viitting the way c, so that a slight rotation of the cams will clamp the saddles G G' trmly on the way of the machine, allowing the position of the shaft-holding jaws to be changed at will. one pair of jaws will usually be sufficient.

The spindles are then separated by The shaft to be centered is placed between the opposing faces of the sliding jaws F, F', F, and F3, the rotation of the right and left hand screws H H bringing thev jaws firmly against the sides of the shaft. The motion of the lever g2 is then reversed and the spindles D D carried toward each other, bringing the drills K K in position to bore a center hole in both ends of the shaft J at the same time.
The axes of the spindles D D' are in alignment, and the jaws, Which are brought in contact with the periphery of the shaft J at or near its ends, hold the shaft in proper position to be centered by the action of the drills K K'.
What We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
l. The combination, with the rotating spindles, of sleeves provided with teeth, a rack slidingin Ways, and pinions intermediate the rack and toothed sleeves, so the longitudinal l motion of the rack will produce asimultaneous sliding motion of the spindle toward or away from each other, as and for the purpose set 25 forth.
2. The combination, with the bed A and heads B B', carrying the opposing drill-holding spindles D D', of shaft-holdingjaws adjustable on the bed of the machine and cam-levers 3o 7a k', acting against the bed ofthe machine, as and for the purpose set forth.
