Description

Oct. 19, 1971 w. c. CHAPMAN PIPE WRENCH ADAPTER Filed Jan. 2, 1970 w/z L l/IM c. CHAPMAN INVEN'IOR.
ATTOPA/EV "United States Patent 01 fiCe US. Cl. 81-180 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This application discloses a device for making a conventional, adjustable, open end wrench into a pipe wrench. The invention resides in the particular combination and arrangement of elements and particularly in a fiat plate like element having serrations at one end, and a curved lip at the other end, which device is designed to be received in the slotted end of a conventional open end Wrench, so that the wrench may be converted into a pipe wrench with the addition of a conventional sprocket chain. The invention device is also provided with means whereby it may be used with a ratchet wrench, or a socket wrench as well as a conventional open end wrench.
The invention relates to hand tools and has particular reference to a device which may be used with a conventional open end wrench, a ratchet wrench, or a socket wrench, whereby such wrenches may readily be converted into a pipe Wrench by adding a conventional sprocket chain thereto.
An object of the invention is to generally improve devices of the character indicated and to provide a pipe wrench adapter which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, and efficient in operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character indicated which may be used to transform a conventional open end wrench, a ratchet wrench, a socket wrench, or an Allen wrench into a pipe wrench.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device, which when applied to a conventional, adjustable, open end wrench, the latter may be used to loosen and remove the screw-on-lid from a conventional glass jar without damaging either the lid or the jar.
The foregoing objects and advantages of the invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds, reference being made from time to time to the accompanying drawing, forming part of the within disclosure, in which drawing:
FIG. 1 is a fragmentary, plan view of a conventional, adjustable end wrench which is equipped with the invention devicewhereby to convert the adjustable end wrench into a pipe wrench.
FIG. 2 is a plan view of a similar adjustable, open end wrench which is provided with a modified form of the invention device, whereby the assembly may be used to loosen and remove the lid of a conventional glass jar.
FIG. 3 is a plan view of the invention device, which is provided with a rectangular opening for receiving the lug of a conventional ratchet wrench, which when provided with a chain as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the ratchet wrench serves as a pipe wrench.
FIG. 4 is a left end view of the device shown in FIG. 3.
FIG. 5 is a plan view of the device as used with ratchet wrench shown in FIGS. 3 and 4.
FIG. 6 is a plan view of the invention device which is modified to provide a hexagonal stud to be received in the socket of a conventional socket wrench.
FIG. 7 is a plan view of another modified form of the invention device which is provided with an opening therein for receiving an Allen wrench, whereby the Allen wrench may be used as a pipe wrench.
Patented Oct. 19, 1971 Referring now more particularly to the drawings, it will be understood that in the embodiment herein disclosed, the reference character 11 indicates, in general, a convention, adjustable, open end wrench having a fixed jaw 12 and a movable jaw 13. The movable jaw 13 has a rack like extension 14 which reciprocates in a slot 15 formed in the fixed jaw 11. A rotatable screw 16 is arranged to engage the teeth of the rack 14 to move the jaw 13 in the slot 15. The elements just described are the elements of a conventional, adjustable, open end wrench and constitute no part of the invention, except as they are combined with the elements hereinafter described.
The invention device per se consists of a flat, angular, plate like member 17 which has serrations 18 formed at one end and a curved lip portion 19 formed at the other end. The serrations 18 serve to bite into a conventional pipe 20 and the lip 19 is adapted to be received in one of the links 21 of a conventional sprocket chain 22, the opposite end of which is pivoted, as at 23, to the device 17. The reduced end 24 of the invention device 17 is extended between the jaws 12 and 13 and into and through the slot 15, so that the end 24 extends beyond the edge of the jaw 13. The wheel 16 is then rotated in the direction to close the jaws 13 onto the sides of the member 17. The device is then moved toward the pipe 20 so that the serrations or teeth 18 contact the periphery of the pipe 20. The chain 22 is then extended around the pipe and the free end of the chain is made fast to the lip 19 of the device. The conventional, adjustable, open end wrench 11 then becomes a pipe wrench.
In FIG. 2 I illustrate a somewhat smaller adjustable, open end wrench 25 which is provided with a modified form of the invention device 26, which is held in the jaws of the open end wrench as previously described. In this embodiment, however, the lip 27 is shaped a little differently, so that it may be removed in a link of a similar sprocket chain 28, which in this instance encircles a conventional glass jar lid 29 which may then be pried loose from the glass jar (not shown).
In FIGS. 3 and 4 I show a slightly different modification of the invention device 30 which is provided with a rectangular opening 31, in which may be received the rectangular stud 32 of a conventional socket wrench 33. In this modification the serrations 34- and the lip end 35 function as previously described when a conventional sprocket chain is added.
In FIG. 5 I show a plan view of the invention device which is provided with the rectangular opening 31 as previously described in connection with FIG. 3.
In FIG. 6 I show a further modified form of the invention device 36 which is provided with a hexagonal stud 37, which is arranged to be received in the socket 38 of a conventional socket wrench 39. In this modified form the serrations 40- and the lip end 41 serve as previously described when the chain 42. is afiixed and encircles a pipe 43.
In FIG. 7 I illustrate a further modified form of the invention device 43' which is provided with an opening 44 which is adapted to receive the end of an Allen wrench 45, so that the Allen wrench may be used with the device to form a pipe wrench when a sprocket chain 46 is applied as previously described. In this modification the serrations 47 engage the pipe 48 as previously described.
:It is believed that the operation of the device is obvious from the foregoing description.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An adapter for a wrench, comprising a fiat, angular, plate-like member having serrations at one end and a curved lip at the opposite end, said plate having pivot means near the serrated end. a chain secured at one end to said pivot means and having the opposite end received on said cunved lip, said plate-like member having a reduced portion near said curved lip, which said reduced portion is received in a slot formed in a moveable jaw of an open end wrench and said curved lip extends beyond the outside edge of said moveable jaw.
2. An adapter for a wrench, comprising a flat, angular, platelike member having serrations at one end and a curved lip at the opposite end, said plate having pivot means near the serrated end, a chain secured at one end to said pivot means and having the opposite end received on said curved lip, said plate-like member having a reduced portion near said curved lip, which said reduced portion is received in a slot formed in a moveable jaw of an open end wrench and said curved lip extends beyond the outside edge of said moveable jaw, said plate- 4 like member being received in edgewise position between the jaws of an adjustable open wrench, and said jaws are retracted to securely grasp the edges of said member to secure it against displacement.
