POST AND CLAMP ASSEMBLY BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION When not worn, wigs are generally mounted on a wig form and stored in awig case. When it is desired to comb out, cut or otherwise work on the wig, the wig form is preferably supported on a fixed post so that the operator need not hold the wig form in place.
Commercial establishments which deal in wigs generally have fixed posts. However, women in the home and beauty parlors have need for posts that can be removed. Removable posts have been known in the art but such posts have generally been unnecessarily complex in construction, bulky and complex to operate.
- SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Generally speaking, in accordance .with the invention, a post and clamp assembly is provided with a minimal number of operating elements. The post provides means for supporting a wig form along the base thereof as well as along its central bore. The clamp assembly operating mechanism is located within the post whereby such mechanism is completely hidden when a wig form is in place on the post. This prevents the snagging of wig hair and also provides for a finished appearance such that the post and clamp assembly can be used to display wigs on wig form.
Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide an improved post and clamp assembly of simplified construction.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved post and clamp assembly which supports a wig form along the base thereof and along its central bore.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved post and clamp assembly wherein the operating elements of the clamp assembly are substantially hidden from view when a wig form is on the post.
Still other objects and advantages of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part be apparent from the specification.
The invention accordingly comprises an article of manufacture possessing the features, properties, and the relation of elements which will be exemplified in the article hereinafter described, and the scope of the invention will be indicated in the claims.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING For a fuller understanding of the invention, reference is had to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a post and clamp assembly constructed in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the instant invention, showing the post and clamp assembly mounted to the edge of a table and having a wig form mounted thereon as indicated in phantom lines;
FIG. 2 is a sectional view, at an enlarged scale, taken along line 2-2 of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Post and clamp assembly 11 is preferably formed with a molded plastic one-piece body member 12 having a hollow sidewall 13, a top 14 and a circular base 15. Sidewall 13 has the configuration of a truncated cone and joins circular base 15 at an enlarged lower end 16. An aperture 17 is provided in top wall 14. The base 15 is provided with a planar bottom surface 18 in order that the body member may rest on and engage a flat surface such as table 19, having a table top 20 with an overhanging edge 21..
A knob 22 has a tapered sidewall 23 which terminates, at the top thereof, in a dome shape portion 24. The lowermost end of sidewall 23 may be flanged as at 25 with the diameter of the flange following an extension of tapered sidewall 13. Knob 22 has a planar bottom wall 26 disposed opposite top wall 14 and a washer 27 may be interposed between knob 22 and top wall 14. Washer 27 is preferably formed of a low friction material such as Teflon to permit smooth rotation of the knob relative to the body member, especially after the body member has been clamped to the top as hereinafter described.
A threaded shaft 28 has its upper end fixed in knob 24. If desired, knob 24 may be formed of plastic material and shaft 28 molded in situ in the knob. Shaft 28 extends through aperture 17 into the hollow body member 12.
A generally C-shaped bracket 31 is located partially within body member 12. A vertical portion 32 extends between a short top portion 33 and a long bottom portion 34. Both the top and bottom portions extend substantially at right angles with respect to vertical portion 32.
To mount the post and clamp assembly on table top 20, knob 22 is rotated to extend bracket 31 outwardly of body member 12 until the clearance between pad 37 and bottom surface 18 is greater than the thickness of overhanging edge 21. Bottom surface 18 is then placed in contact with the top of table top 20 and bottom portion 34 is oriented into a position below the lower surface of overhanging edge 21. Knob 22 is then rotated in a reverse direction so as to draw the bracket 31 into the body member and tightly clamp the post and clamp assembly onto the table top.
With the post and clamp assembly mounted on the table top, the exterior surface of body member 12 provides a base for the mounting thereon of a wig form 41. Wig forms are well known in the art and, as a standard matter, have a central tapered bore of standard dimension. The dimensions of the exterior surface of body member 12 are designed to closely fit with the tapered bore in the wig form whereby the wig form may be placed on the body member with the lower surface 42 of the wig form in engagement with the top surface of base 15. In such manner, the wig form is securely held in position so that a wig may be placed thereon for styling, combing, cutting, etc. of the wig.
When the wig form is removed from the post and clamp assembly, the assembly can be removed from the table by loosening the gripping action between body member 12 and bracket 31 by rotation of knob 22.
It will thus be seen that the objects set forth above, among those made apparent from the preceding description, are efficiently attained and, since certain changes may be made in the above article without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the the invention which, as a-matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
