Description

(No Model.
J.T.DULANY. COTTON PAGKER.
Patented Mar. 1, 1887.
Arnnr rricn,
JOHN THORNTON DULANY, OF BELTON, TEXAS.
COTTON- PACKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,805, dated March 1, 1857.
Application filed November 17, 1886. Serial No. 219,167. No model.)
To ail whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN THORNTON DU- LANY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Belton, in the county of Bell and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Packers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- 7 Figure 1 is a front view of my improved cotton-packer. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same on line 00 m, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of cotton-packers, or presses for packing cotton, straw, hay, or any other material in bales, in which a plunger is forced down in a box having suitable doors in its sides for the purpose of giving access to the interior of the box; and it contemplates certain improvements upon the packer for which Letters Patent No. 318,490 were granted to me on the 31st day of August, 1886; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 indicates the boX having the four uprights 2, all of which are of the usual construction.
The drive-shaft 3 is journaled in the same manner as the drive-shaft of the hereinbeforedescribed packer, and is provided with the pulleys 4 and 5 in the same manner as the shaft in the said packer, the pulley 5 being shown in dotted line only in Fig. 1.
The shiftinglevcr 6, sliding bearing 7, and brake 8 are similar to the ones found in the other packer, and the pulley upon the inner end of the drive-shaft engages the flanged wheel 9 in the same manner, revolving the shaft 10 or drum of the said flanged wheel in either direction in the same manner as the wheel and shaft are revolved in the packer above referred to.
The plunger 11 is provided with a rectangu- Iaruprightframe, 12, which slidesin the bearings formed by the uprights of the box, and a chain, 13, is secured with its lower end to the center of the upper side of the plunger, being secured to and winding upon the drum of the flanged wheel. The upper end of the upright frame of the plunger is provided with a cross-picce, 14, to the middle of which a strong spring, 15, is secured at its middle, having its ends preferably projecting slightly upward, and chains 16 are secured to the ends of this spring and wind upon the drum, to which they are secured with their lower ends, winding in the opposite direction to the chain passingvupward from the plunger.
It will now be seen that as the drum is revolved by means of the shifting-shaft the plunger will either be raised or forced down, the chains winding or unwinding upon the drum, and it will be seen that while only one chain is necessary to raise the plunger, where comparatively little strain is exercised, two chains serve to draw the plunger down, the spring furthermore cushioning the force with which the plunger is drawn down, so as to prevent any breaking of the chains by the strain upon them.
The operation of the press is substantially the same as in the press or packer referred to, the chains taking the place of the cogged rack, and the drum taking the place of the shaft having the pinion, and it will be seen that, the diameter of the drum being compara tively less than the diameter of either of the flanges upon the. flanged wheel or disk, the force with which the plunger is raised Or lowered may be considerable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a press, the combination of a reciprocating plunger having an upright frame formed with a cross-piece at its top, a drum having means for revolving it in opposite directions, a chain attached to the plunger and to the drum winding upon the same, a spring secured at its middle to the cross-piece of the plungerframe, andchains secured to the ends of the spring and to the drum winding upon the same in opposite direction to the chain from the plunger, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: JOllh THORNTON I IlllANY.
R. L. GULLY, M. J. BOWMAN.
