Description

J; D. TOWN ER 80 G. .J. HARRES,
improvement in Baling Presses.
Patented Oct. 24,1871.
UNITED STATES TENT OFFICE.
JUSTIN D. TOWNER AND GENERAL J. HARRIS, OF MURFREESBOROUGH,
TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALlNG-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,347, dated October 24, 1 871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JUSTIN D. TOWNER and ing drawing forming part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in presses for hay, cotton, and the like; and it consists in a novel arrangement of a capstan, rope, and pulleys for Working the follower by horsepower, the said arrangement being very simple and cheap.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the press and section of the capstan. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the capstan and top view of the press, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
A is a vertical frame, as common to other presses, with a follower, B, working downward in the case arranged on said frame. The ends 0 of the follower, which project through the sides of the case, have each a grooved pulley, D, mounted in a slot in the end for carrying a rope, E, attached at one end to the bed-piece of the frame, as shown at F, and passing up over said pulley, then down under another pulley, Gr, attached to the bed-frame, and thence to the capstan H, which is arranged 011 a frame, I, mounted at the other ends of the sills K of the bed-frame, which are so extended at one side of the machine as to support said capstan at such distance from the press as to admit the horses for turning it to pass between it and the press. The said sills K will be embedded in the ground, to admit of the horses walking over them readily. The follower is raised again by the roller L, ropes, M, pulleys N, and hand-crank O, the roller being arranged on the side of the press opposite to the one having the horse-power.
This provides a very simple and cheap horsepower apparatus and gearings for working the follower for pressing, and it is efiicient as well as simple.
We propose to have a draggingbrace attached to the sweep of the capstan, to arrest and hold it at any time when the horse stands; but particularly when the pressing is finished and the force is to be retained while tying the bale.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the press-case and follower, of the ropes E, pulleys D G, and capstan H, all arranged substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the follower, of the ropes M, pulleys N, roller L, and handcrank, when arranged relatively to the press-case and the horse-power apparatus, as described.
JUSTIN D. TOWNER. GENERAL J. HARRIS.
