CLOTHESl DRIBR.
Ne. 357,926. Patented Feb.l15, 188% Aa y wim/Lado@ IINTTED STATES GH ARLES 'DANVIRS HAVKINS,
PATENT OFFICE;
OF NFV IBERIA, LOUISIANA.
CLOTHES-DRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,926, dated February 15,1887.
Application filed August 25, ISSG.
T0 all whom, may (fo/1.00772,.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES Drinvms IIAwiruvs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Iberia, in the parish of Iberia and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Driers, oi"
which the following is a specification.
improved clothes-drier of simple and durable construction, thatis to be revolved or rotated by the action or force of the wind on suitable sails or wings, so that the clothes hung or suspended thereon will be exposed to the action of the sun and wind to a greater extent than has heretofore been possible, and thus effect the drying thereof in a shorter space of time.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a clothes-drier embodying my invention, Figure l is a top plan view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view on the line x a: of Fig. I. Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical section showing the pivot for the drier.
Referring tothe drawings, in which like letlers of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures, A designates a vertical standard or upright, of either wood or metal, which is provided atits upper end with a sleeve or collar, B, that is affixed rigidly thereon. This post or upright is planted very securely in the earth in the yard of a dwelling, field, or other place where the air or wind can have free access thereto, and on the upper end thereof I arrange a horizontal drier, C, which is free to rotate around the standard under theimpulse or force ofthe wind acting on the sails or wings D thereof, all as more fully described presently.
The collar or band Bis provided with a central spindle or shaft, Z), that is held rigidly and immovably on the standard and provioled'withv a conical or pointed end, as shown, and the rotary drier C is provided with a central hub, c,
' which has asocket, c', in which the short spindle b fits, so as to support the drier. This Serial No. 211,811. (No model.)
socket c has an open lower end, and a closed upper end, which is made conical in form, s o that t-he spindle will fitclosely therein, to prevent sagging of the drier, and the drier has a series of radial arms, C', which are secured very rigidly and firmly at their inner ends in the central hub. drier are of wood or metal, as may be preferred, and they have transverse openings or perforations, through which are passed the wires, cords, or other like means, E, from which the clothes are hung or suspended.
The sails or wings D are aflixed to the outer extremities of the radial arms of the rotary drier, and they are so disposed that they will catch and utilize the force of the wind to propel the drier or cause it to turn, and thus expose the clothes suspended thereon to the wind and sun to a very material extent and facilitate the drying thereof.`
'Ihe sails or wings in the instance shown herein are disposed in vertical lines, and are curved transversely, so that one edge thereof projects outwardly beyond the end of the arm and the other edge projects in rear of the arms. The vertical wing or sail is secured by nails or other suitable means to outer extremity of the arm, and itis braced and strengthened by an inclined rod or bar, F, that is secured to the arm and sail, as shown. I do not, however,
wish to coniine"1nyself to the exact form of sail or wing shown herein, as I am aware that others can be substituted therefor without departing from the principle of my invention.
G designates a vertical rod or standard, which is affixed centrally to the rotary drier and extends above the same, and to the upper extremity of this short standard is affixed a cap, j", which has a perforated rim, to which are secured the upper ends of inclined bracewires II, that are secured at their opposite ends to the radial arms C', between the extremities thereof, thus materially strengthening and bracing the arms.
The rotary drier is elevated a considerable distance above the ground, so as to be out of the reach or way of the animals around the dwelling, and access to the drier can be had, in order to remove and hang the clothes, by means of a horizontahplatform, I, that is supported on suitable uprights, i, and arranged These radial arms C of the to one side of the standard beneath the drier, the platform being reached-by a flight of steps, J, of ordinaryr'construct-ion, as shown.
K designates a box or receptacle, that is secured upon the standard beneath the drier for the purpose of receiving the clothes-pins or other artieles.
The operation ofniy invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description taken in connection With the drawings. The clothes are hung thereonin the usual manner, and the sails or Wings catch the breeze or Wind to revolve the drier, in order to expose its contents to the Wind and sun more effeetually, and thereby hasten the drying thereof.
L designates a bracket or plate, which is affiged to the lower side of the hub of the rotary drier, andin this bracket are journaled friotionrollers Z, which bearupon the upper end of the post or standard, and thereby reduce the friction of the Working parts in Contact with each other to a minimum; or the said bracket may be secured to the upper end of the standard, so that the huh of the rotary drier Will bear on the friction-rollers, and thus eiect the same result, as Will be very readily understood.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1e A rotary clothes-drier having` the sails or Wings, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
2. A rotary clothes-drier having the radial arms and the sails or Wings at the outer ends of the arms, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth. l
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my oWnI have hereto aiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES DANVIRS HAVKINS.
